Jake had left her there to stay with Bella and Edward. She was happy when the awkward tension dissipated, but that happiness faded quickly when the news reached them.
"It's starting." Edward announced. "Jacob just got there. He's good." He told Ever. They waited in silence, Edward making a face.
"Someone's hurt?" Bella asked.
"She's close. I can hear her thoughts." Edward answered. "Seth, go." Bella made her way to him. "She knew we weren't there, but she caught my scent. She knew you'd be with me."
"She found us." Bella said.
"She's not alone." Edward announced.
"Riley?" Ever asked. Her question was answered when she saw him.
"Riley, listen to me." Edward started. "Victoria's just using you to distract me. She knows I'll kill you."
"She doesn't care." Ever added as Victoria made herself known.
"In fact, she'll be glad she doesn't have to deal with you anymore." Edward maintained eye contact with her.
"Don't listen, Riley. I told you about their mind tricks." Victoria said.
"It's a master/servant relationship." Ever whispered. "He's blindly loyal to her."
"Break it." Edward whispered sharply before turning back to them. "I can read her mind. So I know what she thinks of you."
"I can't break it. It's too strong." Ever whispered. "I can weaken it."
"He's lying." Victoria told Riley.
"Then do it." Edward ordered.
"Don't you think I'm trying?"
"She only created you and this army to avenge her true mate, James." Edward continued. "That's the only thing she cares about. Not you."
Riley was starting to doubt her, but Victoria was quick. "There's only you. You know that." She reassured.
"Think about it. You're from Forks." Edward told him. "You know the area. That's the only reason she chose you."
"You were a victim of opportunity." Ever tried.
"She doesn't love you." Edward continued.
"Riley." Victoria called. "Don't let him do this to us. You know I love you." Riley looked conflicted, only for a minute.
"You're dead." He told them.
"I can't get it weak enough." Ever shouted. Seth shot out from the rock he'd been hiding on as Riley made his way toward them. Riley screamed as Seth ripped his hand off. "Tell me again why they benched the kid?" Ever asked, pointing to him.
Victoria leapt from the tree, running off. "You won't get another chance like this again." Edward called. "You want her. You want me to feel the pain you felt when I killed James. When I tore him to pieces. When I turned him into ash. When I turned him into nothing." She took the bait, running at Edward. They hit the snow hard, Ever pushing Bella back. Edward threw Victoria, making her fly through the air before she caught herself on a tree.
She climbed up it, Edward running off with Bella. He found the tree Victoria camped in, pushing it so she would fall. She slid gracefully on the snow before turning to face Bella. Edward got to her before she was able to even think about going toward Bella. Ever saw Riley kick Seth away, making her way to him before he could get to Edward. She was quick to use her spinning techniques to dodge Riley's hits. The scent of Bella's blood flooded her senses, like the third wife from the story. Knowing what she was doing, Ever quickly took advantage of a momentarily stunned Riley. She hit him into a snow-covered rock before sliding him over to Seth.
