In the back of the kitchen, I helped myself to a piece of pie with salad. Soon I would be joining Bergamote and Alistair at the bus stop near our home to see Daphne and the other dancers perform. It was a moment I had been waiting for for months.

I had hardly eaten anything all day. My first appointment with Taylor, across town, had taken a long time. He had redone the molding of my teeth and had also done some additional tests. My jaw was painful that night, but I didn't care. The hope of getting the braces off in a month gave me the courage to endure the pain.

"So, Ronney, you're going out tonight?"

Shit. The bitch Gabriella had just entered the kitchen, followed by Carolina. I nodded without looking at them.

She put her bucket of water beside me and added, "We're here sweating to fix the restaurant while you're off having fun with the old folks!"

Carolina laughed nastily at her cousin's comment, then grabbed food from my plate. I pushed the plate away, losing my appetite. Gabriella took the wet mop from the bucket and threw it on my clothes. When it touched me, I let out a small scream.

"Are you crazy!" I protested. "I'm soaked!"

"Shut up!" Carolina said in a sharp tone. "It's not like we spilled the bucket on you."

Gabriella added, "Besides, it's not like you're dressed in a couture dress. I mean, look at you, those baggy pants are awful."

I tried to dry myself a little, but to no avail. I hoped that my clothes would dry on the way.

Carolina leaned over me. "Your mother asked us to take out the meat and desserts to start preparing dinner."

"In the walk-in freezer," I grumbled as I went to retrieve my bag from the center table.

"Thanks, Ugly Ronney," Carolina replied, taking care to articulate each word.

They went to the back of the kitchen, giggling like hyenas.

"You need to grow up!" I whispered so they wouldn't hear me.

I was about to leave, but an idea came to me. No, my good conscience whispered. Go ahead, said the evil one. Let the evil Ronney have her revenge.

I turned to look across the kitchen towards the walk-in freezer. Excitement rose in me and my pulse quickened. I scanned the place with my eyes. No one was there. I dropped my bag on the floor and slowly made my way to the back of the kitchen. The closer I got to the walk-in freezer, the more I could hear the sound of their voices, their unbearable laughter.

In front of the heavy, half-open doors, I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. All the mockeries, the words, the persecutions, made my anger rise, held back for too long. When I opened my eyes, I brutally closed the doors on Gabriella and Carolina. The laughter changed to screams.

"Ronney! Ronney, get us out of here! We're locked in."

Hearing their whining gave me a feeling of pleasure I had never experienced before.

"Ronney, can you hear us? Are you there?"

I put my face to the door and shouted, "Go fuck yourselves!"

As I left the kitchen, I put on a falsely innocent face and kept what had just happened to myself. I walked through the doors of the restaurant with a triumphant smile on my face.
