I sat in the passenger seat of my mum's car, it was hard to read when the flashing of streetlights brought light one second, and then complete darkness the next. It was 11:45 pm and the radio was on a podcast about 'Quick 'n easy recipes for dinner. I sat there, quietly reading my book until the humming of the car spluttered to a stop. I looked up from the page I was reading, we were at the bottom of our street.

Mum sighed and got out of the car, she opened the bonnet and checked the engine. I continued reading the last paragraph of page 120, chapter 5. I stifled a laugh as I read: "Trudie and her friend were enjoying the ride when all of a sudden their car broke down, Chelsie stepped out and lifted the bonnet to see what the matter was".

What a coincidence, I thought. I finished reading the paragraph shocked that something had happened to Chelsie, but Trudie and the other girls didn't know what happened because the bonnet of the car was blocking their view. I laughed, but this time more unsettled by the content. My eyes quickly darted up to the bonnet. I saw a bony hand reaching for the top of it, pulling it down slowly.

Mum's head was still in the engine and didn't see the stranger behind her, but then again, neither could I, his face was shadowed. I tried to say something, anything to warn Mum, but, before I could, he started smashing the bonnet repeatedly on her head. She let out a scream that didn't last as long as mine. I hugged my knees, as the sound of her neck being snapped in half sounded more like meat mincer. I was still holding the book in my hands and with a shaky hand, I turned the page to chapter 6.

"Trudie and her friends tried to ignore the blood that was splattering the windscreen, but eventually they couldn't ignore the fact that the 'thing' had left Chelsie and jumped up on top of the car and written a message in the blood 'YOUR NEXT'". With a sick feeling in my stomach, I dropped my book to read the same message on my windscreen with a smiling face peering into the passenger window.

I knew if I read quick enough, I might be able to get out of this alive...
