Chapter 15

This was insane. It couldn't be real. Who was that silvery stranger, and what had he done with Kurama? Sakura looked at Hiei for answers, but he only had eyes for the ring. His smile was almost hungry, like he was finally receiving a reward after years of toiling.

Wait, Kurama's original form is a fox demon... does that mean...? Did the Idunn Box turn him back into his true self? Is that Yoko Kurama?!

It sounded crazy, but what other explanation could there possibly be? Sakura's head whirled. If Kurama was now in his truest form, did this mean the Kurama she'd fallen for was gone forever, replaced by silver-haired Yoko? Would such a creature even want her anymore? Probably not. The thought was unbearable, but there was no clear answer. At least, not yet.

Koto was trying her best to peer into the mist. "Yes, the ring is shrouded in fog. And with Juri MIA, who knows what fantastic action is happening within those cloudy walls?"

Thanks to tsunagu, Sakura was the only one who knew exactly what was happening...

Urashima's knees were knocking together. He looked about ready to wet himself. "Please, be a nightmare," he whimpered. The mist he'd unleashed was swirling around him in the most eerie fashion, but it could not shield him from the fearsome power now unlocked within his foe.

Yoko towered above Urashima. There was no denying that the Kurama they knew was there, but only in slight appearance. Red hair replaced by silver, along with fox ears and a tail, and instead of emerald, his eyes were a blazing gold.

"There is no room for your fantasies of denial, little vermin," Yoko growled. "Be assured, I am alive,"

"But the stories all say you're dead!" Urashima whined. "You were caught! You were killed!"

Yoko narrowed his eyes. "Yes, I'm so flattered you've heard of me. But as you see, the stories were incorrect,"

A jolt of electricity forced Kuwabara back. "It's like a thunderstorm in there. Where's all that weird energy I'm feeling coming from?"

"It's all Kurama, down to the last drop," Hiei grinned.

Kuwabara yelped in shock. "But it's different somehow... and a heck of a lot more powerful!"

"Seems that the fool he's been fighting has turned him back into his demon form. Before he was tainted by you humans,"

Sakura pulled her focus from the ring onto Hiei. Maybe he was about to give them some answers.

"Fifteen years ago, the spirit fox Yoko Kurama was thought to have been killed while escaping from a botched burglary," Hiei explained. "In desperation, he hid himself in your world, using a human body to slowly recover his spirit energy. He thought no-one would find him. I did,"

Sakura hadn't seen Hiei look this thrilled in a very long time. Possibly not since the day she'd first seen him in the forest with the Shadow Sword...

Goki roared with laughter at the sight of who Hiei had brought along. "So you're telling me this is him?" he snorted. He couldn't believe Hiei had dragged them all into the forest just to play such a ridiculous prank.
