Chapter 7: Tell me you love me

Colby invited me to join him and Brennen to explore a huge cross on a mountain. Colby has been talking about Brennen for a while and he wants us to meet. I agreed because he's so excited. He knocks on my door and we head to his car to pick up Brennen. We arrive to find Brennen waiting for us outside his building. He gets in the backseat. About halfway through, I feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I don't have to turn around to know that Brennen is staring at me.

We arrive at the mountain and start the hike. It becomes clear to me that Brennen and I share a mutual dislike of each other. Colby and Brennen end up walking ahead of me. We reach the top of the mountain and they head over to take pictures. I feel left out while they pose for pictures, not inviting me to join. I head over to the edge and admire the view until a voice calls my name.

"Sam, let's go!" Colby yells.

I follow them back down the mountain and back to the car. Brennen gets in the front, taking my normal spot. As they talk, I realize that I've been replaced. We arrive at Brennen's building and he gets out. But Colby doesn't drive away.

"Sam?"

"Yeah?"

"Aren't you going to get in the front?" he asks.

"I thought that was for your new best friend," I retort.

"Sam, come on. It's not like that."

"Let's go home Colby."

Sensing, perhaps, that there isn't any point in arguing, he starts the car.
