//MENTIONS OF DEATH//

Being a Winged Child isn't easy. You're kept in the dark and have to hide who you are from the world. Unfortunately for Shoyo, this was his life.

"SHOYO" Mrs. Hinata called from downstairs. "YOU'RE GOING TO BE LATE FOR YOUR FIRST DAY!"

Mrs. Hinata was Shoyo's new 'Mom'. After his dad was killed by the Kirai back in America, he had been living with her and her adopted daughter, Natsu. Mrs. Hinata's name was actually Hinata Isa, but Shoyo had only known her for a while, and hadn't gotten used to calling her anything other than 'Mrs. Hinata'.

He walked down to the kitchen already in his uniform.

"Good morning Mrs. Hinata" he murmured, still tired from staying up too late worrying about the next day. After all, what he was about to do would be stressful for anybody. He was going to be starting a new school -in the middle of a school year-, in a new country, all in a different language! I guess I'm just lucky that I'm really good with languages and was able to pick up Japanese easily. He thought to himself.

"Isa." Mrs. Hinata said in a playfully stern voice, answering his murmured good morning. "Now don't forget that you're biking to school today."

"Right," He said, dread evident in his voice. "Well, I better go then. See you after school. Bye Natsu!" He yelled after the girl walking sleepily down the stairs.

As he biked, his mind wandered. Last night, with his mind in a constant state of worry, he had decided that he was going to try to be more upbeat and happier at this school than he was in America. That, and without the huge threat of the roaming Kirai looking for Winged Children, he was genuinely feeling a lot more lively. Though there were still some moments where he would be reminded of the times he had spent with his father, moments like this.

He was almost at the school when he passed a park. There, there was a dad pushing his son on the swings. The boy could have only been about 5, the same age when his dad would take him places like the park. He watched as the dad pushed the kid on the swings, laughter evident on both of their faces. He really missed his dad.

Snapping out of it, he realized that he was already at his school, but he was running late. Locking up his bike, he raced into the school, towards what he thought was the way to the office.

Turns out, that wasn't the way to the office. Fortunately, someone else was running late to their class too. Up ahead, there was a boy digging through his bag.

"Hey!" he yelled out to the boy. From what he could see, the boy had silver hair, and looked to be average height, which -to his dismay- was still almost a head taller than him. The boy looked up, and for a second, he got this weird feeling before he pushed it away.

"Oh! Sorry, you scared me." The silvered-haired boy had this weird look flash through his eyes, before asking, "um- I didn't think there was any middle school tours today, but are you lost from your group?"

Ah. Of course. "No" he muttered angrily under his breath. "No, well I am lost, but I'm not a middle schooler. I'm a first-year and before you ask, yes I am new," he said. "Could you help me find the office please? I'll tell the principal that you were helping me, so you don't get in trouble." He added as an afterthought. The boy looked surprised for a second before agreeing.

On their way to the office, Shoyo learned a lot about the boy. His name was Sugawara Kōshi, he was a third-year, and he was co-captain of the boys' volleyball team.

"You play volleyball?!" he blurted.

"Yes." Suga smiled. "Are you interested in joining?"

"Could I?" he said timidly. "I didn't think I would be able to join so late in the year, but I would love to if I can. Back in America I-" he cut himself off when he noticed that they had made it to the office.

The boys walked up to the door, Shoyo fidgeting with his fingers. Suga must have noticed his nervousness because he went ahead a knocked on the door.

The principal opened the door quickly and said "Ah! You must be Hinata. Oh, hi Sugawara," He said with a smile.

Shoyo looked around trying to figure out who he was talking about before remembering. Right. He was now a Hinata. He was going to have to get used to that.

"Funny thing is that I was just about to call you down here," he said with a smile, gesturing to Suga as they sat down in his office. "I was going to get you to show Hinata here around the school. I am happy to see that you have met already." he paused before saying, "Now Hinata, here's your schedule. You can see here that you have English class now, and you will have to miss that for today, but I don't think that will be much of a problem, now, will it?" he winked.

Sho blushed and looked down. He had always been embarrassed and ashamed by the ability to learn languages easily, mostly because it was a result of him being who and what he is.

Once they finished getting his schedule sorted out and getting the permission slip for joining the volleyball team, he and Suga left the office and started the tour. The school was huge, and by the time they were finishing the tour, they had already missed two classes.

"The last spot is conveniently the lunch yard. Pretty self-explanatory if I do say so myself." Suga grinned, nudging him in the side. "It's even perfectly timed that it's now-" He was interrupted by the lunch bell ringing and students from all years crowding the yard.

Sho realized that Suga had spent the whole morning with him and that he was probably starting to get annoying. "Well, I guess I'll go look for a spot to eat. Thanks for the tour Suga!" he said with a smile, the anxiety in his face not hidden as well as he would have liked it too.

"Why don't you come sit with the team?" Suga asked quickly. "We all usually sit together, and since you'll be joining, you can come meet everyone!" he added excitedly.

Sho agreed and Suga showed him in the direction of a rowdy bunch sitting around a table.

Once they got closer, Suga jokingly whispered, "I would say that they aren't usually this bad, but..." he trailed off as they watched two boys, one who looked to be the same height as Shoyo and one who looked bald,  jump around on the tables. Beside him, Suga yelled, "NOYA! TANAKA! OFF THE TABLE!"

He turned to Sho with worried eyes, almost as if trying to say sorry for them. But that expression didn't last long when he saw the huge smile plastered on Sho's face.

Shoyo sat on his bed that night, thinking about the day. It went as well as it could have, despite the language barrier and the fact that he was behind in everything.

The team had been amazing. Shoyo thought happily. Maybe here with his new and improved attitude, he would have more friends. After school, they had even let him come watch their practice then invited him to go out for meat buns afterwards! He had stuck by Suga for most of the time though, because for some reason he just felt completely safe around him. It wasn't like he didn't trust the rest of the team; it was just easier to trust Suga for some reason. It was probably because they had spent the most time together so far, he thought to himself.

Hi again! As said in the summary, this story is completely finished but will be scatter posted. There are about 7 chapters and around 10,000 words, so I will probably be posting a chapter a week.

Stay Safe!
