This reminds me of the the dc character, Constantine, because it's definitely something he would do.
But maybe a necromancer in search of itself? He could form a cute bond with one of the 'patients' there as well. The ghosts actually will help his mental health and be there for him. Could be a book of emotional healing but at the end this could be the revelation like a big plot twist :)
