My eyes shot open, frantically darting around the room but yet they settled on nothing. I couldn't see a single thing, I blinked and it was as if nothing happened. Squinting to try and focus didn't help despite my efforts.

Was it just my eyes, or was this room really just unbelievably this pitch dark—

Whos to say they weren't still closed?

I reached my hand up, fingers pawing at my open eyelids— yep this room was really just an endless void.

I squirmed around in my shield of cozy blankets, human instinct telling me they were my only form of protection against what lurked in the dark.

Thinking about how useless my vision was, I relied off my hearing, but my ears picked up absolutely nothing stirring in the darkness. Not the crickets outside, not a swirling ceiling fan, not even my own breathing.

The thick air was uncomfortably warm as it clinged to my sweaty body. I kicked my feet out from under the heavy blankets, trying to cool myself down.

My brain and eyes were now wide awake and yet somehow I still couldn't make out anything in the void of darkness that was Dream's room.

After a few moments of blinking consistently, my blurred vision finally started to see the faint light that was dusted on the surfaces around me.

I turned my head, searching the dark for my sleeping partner. After my eyes couldn't register anything in that empty space beside me, my hands patted the sheets hoping to feel his body.

But they found nothing.

"Dream?" I whispered into the darkness beside me.

A groan, a snore, a whispered 'what?' was all I wanted, but my perked ears received no response.

I sat up in bed, rubbing my eyes. I spoke a little louder, hoping he'd answer me from wherever he was, thinking he was just across the room.

"Dream...? Are you up?"

Scanning the room, my eyes observed what I could barely see in the darkness.

I didn't see what would be his tall dark figure anywhere in that room. I sighed wondering what could possibly be so important to warrant sneaking out in the middle of night.

Pulling the blankets closer to my body I kept looking around the area to observe my surroundings.

The room was flat and it felt like the world was at a standstill. The feeling in my stomach made me feel like I was the only person conscious on this planet— or maybe just the only person...

Not even the silhouettes of those tall trees out the window were breathing.

The best way to describe it would be as if I was walking through a painting, the only thing dynamic on what would otherwise be a completely static world.

My feet hit the floor as I shifted out of bed, the contact of the cold ground sending a shiver up my spine.

I tried not to shudder at how freezing cold Dream's hardwood floor was.

Just like how I tried not to worry about the person who owned said floor...

But goddamn it— Dream was gone, and I was worried.
