It was around the seventh year into their marriage when things had begun to go awry, loud screaming matches, frequent sleeping on the couch or in a guest bedroom, and even the occasional staying with a friend or family member. They were glad they didn't have kids, this way the only ones they're hurting are themselves. And besides, they were each other's first everything and sometimes they wondered if they'd missed out on anything, but they'd never strayed, loyalty was incredibly important to the both of them.

Now don't get me wrong, they're still absolutely in love with each other, it's just with all of the stress, things have hit a rough patch. Especially as Mukuro's military career often had her away for upwards of 6 months, and Sayaka was alone that entire time, it was stressful. The constant moving around she was used to, that was fine, but it was the fact that she had to be away from the love of her life for so long that stressed her out, especially knowing that anything could happen and she wouldn't see her ever again. Every night she slept in the bed alone she felt cold and every argument had her in tears.

That day was like many others at first, Mukuro had slept on the couch before and Sayaka refused to meet her gaze at breakfast until eventually, the shouting began. It ended with an "I'm going out" and Mukuro slamming the front door as Sayaka yelled at her

"THIS IS WHY NOTHING EVER GETS FIXED YOU JUST LEAVE WHILE I'M TALKING TO YOU!" She saw Mukuro flinch as she slammed the door and immediately winced, already feeling apologetic for screaming, but she stayed put.

Soon hours had passed and she hadn't heard from her wife, now she was getting anxious, she called and nothing, she texted and nothing and soon she was pacing around the house. Soon she got a call and answered it in near hysterics.

"Mukuro! Where have you been? I was so worried!"

"Can you promise me that you won't freak out?" Mukuro asked "It's nothing worth freaking out over,"

"Mukuro what happened?"

"I'm in the hospital right now, sorry for not calling you earlier I couldn't call you because my phone died," She said, waiting for Sayaka's inevitable reaction,

"Which one? I'm on my way to pick you up right now, bunny."

"Please don't worry too much, Princess, I'm fine, it's nothing too bad. I'm at the hospital downtown."

"You know I'll always worry babes, what happened?" She said in a soft tone as she grabbed her keys and threw on her jacket. Mukuro let out a sigh before speaking

"It's gonna sound worse than it is," She said "Car got T-boned and was pushed into a truck, I'm not hurt too bad but the car was totaled though, I wasn't on the side that got the most damage" She decided that she wouldn't mention that had she been a few centimeters closer to the truck, her windpipe would have been crushed and she would have died. She could already hear the guilt in Sayaka's voice, and she couldn't do that to her so she wouldn't say anything about that.

"How bad are you hurt?"

"It could be worse,"

"Muku, how bad is it?" Sayaka said, obviously concerned. She had already gotten in the driver's seat of the car, having connected the phone to the car and strapped in.

"Again, it's gonna sound worse than it is, and I promise you that I am alright my dear," She said calmly in an attempt to somewhat soothe her wife. "It's just a few cracked ribs and a broken leg, shouldn't even scar, really"

"Oh my poor baby, I'm coming to pick you up now,"

"You don't need to worry puppy, I promise, I just need to take it easy for a little bit,"

"I love you Mukuro,"

"I love you too Sayaka, I'm sorry for pissing you off earlier."

"No, no, no, no, no, you don't have to apologize babes. I shouldn't have yelled at you, god, I can't even remember what we argued about. Can you?"

"No, it was probably something stupid though,"

"It probably was,"

They'd ended up chatting for a long while, and soon they were on their way home, Sayaka was driving, though she only had one hand on the steering wheel, the other was being held by Mukuro who just wanted to touch Sayaka in any way she could and holding her hand was the best she could do right now. The moment they had gotten back in the house Sayaka urged Mukuro to lay down.

"Are you hungry? I could make something if you want." Sayaka said and Mukuro shook her head.

"No, just come here. I wanna cuddle, puppy." She said

"Alright," She said, soon joining her wife on the couch, tentatively wrapping her arms around her, "Am I holding you too tightly?" She asked

"No, you're not, love." Mukuro assured, "You worry too much." She added, kissing Sayaka's forehead

"You worry too little," Sayaka countered, resting her head against her shoulder lovingly as Mukuro lifted her hand to lightly card her hand through her hair. Sayaka closed her eyes and hummed softly, it was a simple melody, and Mukuro had heard it a million times and she could hear it a million more without getting bored of it.

Sometimes it would be a little different or one part is an octave higher or lower than normal but she loved it regardless. On nights alone, mostly when she was on base or deployed she found it swimming through her head and she couldn't help but crack a smile, no matter the situation that one song would make it better, to her at least.
Mukuro couldn't help but smile, adjusting so that she could easily wrap her other arm around Sayaka, who soon leaned in,

"Kiss," She said and Mukuro chuckled softly, moving the hand from her hair to her chin, lightly tipping her head up and leaning to kiss her. She closed her eyes, feeling Sayaka smile against her lips.

Mukuro isn't sure if it's because she was hopped up on pain meds or if it's because it's been so long, but whatever it was, the euphoria was something she couldn't describe.
