Speed is good. If you think you are fast-forwarding at 2x and you are not, that's good.

The catch on speed is that the skater gotta glide, not flutter over the ice. Fluttering is bad. Ice has to suffer. Bonus points if the next competitor trips on ruts or they have to call in a Zamboni.

When skating in circles, must skate as close to the squat as possible. Doing anything else, the opposite is true, knee to toe gotta be so straight it should hurt to watch.

Must spin on one spot. Anything else is bad.

Flexibility also has to hurt to watch. If a gal can comfortably rest her head on her butt at any point in time, that's a sure sign of a skater's skater. If a guy can do a Bielman (bend over backward pointing straight up) that's also an encouraging sign.

Arms must weave, not wave. Artistic merit of gloves is a subject of a lively debate.

You must be able to count rotations on every jump for fun and profit. If they are too blurry to count, in all likelihood, you are watching a technical skater.
