I had my hair pulled back into a ponytail as I worked over my patient's wound.

"Sutures," I held my hand out, and the tool was placed in my hand.

I moved my hands in the motions of stitching up a wound and placed a small bandage over it.

"Initiating healing sequence," I said, before bending down to kiss the bandage over the scraped knee.

"Mwah," I made an exaggerated kissy sound before standing up straight. "All better."

"All better, mama?" the little girl with the biggest blue eyes asked me.

"All better," I smiled down at her, straightening one of her little blonde pigtails.

Suddenly, another small voice came from the doorway.

"Daddy's home!"

My eyes lit up and I stood, rushing over to the door with tiny footsteps following quickly behind me.

I held up a hand to shield my eyes from the sun.

It took a moment to spot him, but I could just make out his approaching figure in the distance.

In just a moment, I was flying down the steps and sprinting down the dirt path.

He saw me and dropped his luggage, now running to meet me.

We collided and he caught me around the waist, picking me up and spinning me around as I laughed.

He began peppering kisses all over my face, my neck, anywhere he could reach.

Finally, his lips found their way to mine, and my world felt whole again.

Imaginary fireworks went off in my mind. We could hardly kiss through our smiles, but neither of us minded.

Suddenly, a smaller force collided with our legs, and I looked down to see my son, with the same green eyes and curly hair as my mother.

Then, an even smaller force hit us, and I looked down at my daughter, with the beautiful blue eyes of her father and the same blonde hair as her mother.

He picked both of them up with a grunt of exertion, and they both squealed.

"My my, Elizabeth," he pressed a kiss to his girl's forehead, and she grinned as she batted her eyes up at him. "I swear, you've grown a foot since I last saw you! How old are you now? 40?"

She giggled. "No, Daddy, I'm only this many!" Three tiny fingers shot up to indicate her true age.

"Wow! That's a lot," he said. "And Charles, how much do you weigh now?"

As he asked, he pulled him farther up as if with enormous effort, groaning as he did. "You've gotta weigh about a ton!"

He giggled, looking up at his father. "Yeah."

"Yeah? You weigh a ton?" he feigned surprise. "Well, gosh! I must be the strongest dad in the world then!"

"Yeah!" both kids shouted excitedly, throwing their hands up in the air and giggling.

"Alright, Charles, Elizabeth," my voice was smooth as I extracted them from their father's arms. "You two let your father rest his arms after all the engineering work he's been doing."

They allowed themselves to be sat on the ground, and I reached out, taking Trip's hand.

Elizabeth took my other hand, and Charles took Trip's.

And we all walked back to our little farmhouse hand in hand.
