Chapter Ten

Awestruck

Drew Holiday

'Hailey!' I shouted after her! 'You can't tell anyone!' I yelled at her. This wasn't happening... it just couldn't be. How did she find out? I started to run after her, but she was well ahead of me. Who knew she was so fast? She was a couple metres ahead of me on the path, when I saw her blur a bit. What the.. oh my God! She began to shift into a huge snow white wolf until she was fully phased. She burst ahead with the full speed of a werewolf and disappeared into the forest. I froze in my tracks. I walked almost zombie-like back to the house in shock. I reentered the house and plopped down on the couch.

'Hey Drew...' Danny said. He paused and inspected my expression. 'What's up?'

'Hailey...' I muttered.

'What's up with Hailey... hey. Speaing of her, where'd she go?' he asked sitting down beside me and popping his feet up on the coffee table.

'She ran away...' I muttered.

'And you couldn't catch her?' he teased. I was the fastest of all of us, so his unsureness was understandable.

'She shifted.' I said.

'That's no excuse you could've... wait. What?' he asked.

'She shifted into a huge white wolf and ran away.' I said blankly.

'Hailey is a werewolf?!?' he asked. Wait... it suddenly made sense. She said she couldn't be here. She was a part of the North pack. That explained why she wasn't a part of our pac and why she didn't know we were werewolves.

'Apparently...' I muttered.

I needed to find her. I searched the halls frantically. As soon as Hailey hadn't shown up for World History, I had excused myself to go to the washroom to look for her. I was walking down the hallway, close to giving up, when I saw a small curled up figure up against the lockers. Hailey was listening to her iPod and sitting discreetly out of view from any classroom. I grabbed her arm and pulled her up, ignoring the sharp electric stings on my hand. She stared at me in shock, ha. Did she think she was never going to have to deal with me again? Ha! She actually looked pretty out of her zone right now, vulnerable.

'You're coming with me,' I said. She just stared at me.

'Wwwwwhat?' she stuttered. I wasn't playing the Drew that everyone knew right now, I wasn't the perfect lovable jock. I was in charge.

'I said, you're coming with me,' I pulled her along, my hand felt burned and charred, but I just locked my jaw and continued on. I pulled her into my car and started driving off. She stared at me wide eyed. 'Start.' I said coldly. She just stared at me still. 'Explain yourself.' I was so tempted, that I looked into her green eyes for just a moment. Something I've been wanting to do ever since our little moment in the library, but have been avoiding just as well. As soon as my eyes made contact with her swirly green orbs, I suddenly felt guilty for being so harsh with her. I looked away.

'I... well... I ah... am a werewolf?' she asked.

'I saw.' I noted, keeping my eyes on the road.

'There's not much else.' she said quietly.

'I beg to differ.' I said.

'What?!? Do you want me to disclose my pack secrets to you Drew?' she said.

'Of course not.' I said smirking.

'My father has practically taught me to hate you, I can't just sit here and tell you things like we're best friends.' she huffed.

'Yeah, but that was before you knew it was me.' I joked. She didn't say anything. 'What's your Dad like?' I suddenly asked.

'He's nice...' she said.

'I could say the exact same thing about my Dad...' I muttered. She looked at me sympathetically. 'He's a bit of a handful...'

'I doubt he's anything in comparison to my Dad.' she said. 'He puts so much pressure on me.' I laughed.

'I doubt you even know stressful.' I said. 'I have to be Alpha of my whole crazy pack.'

'You've just scored some points Holiday,' she said. 'Me too.' I stared at her in disbelief.

'You... are the Alpha?' I raised my eyebrow at her.

'The one and only bub.... grrrrrrrr.' she mock growled. I stifled my laughter, there was just something really cute about it.

'You still want to be my partner?' I asked, jabbing her in the side. She squealed.

'Fine.' she said. 'But we can't be friends.' she said.

'Why not?' I pouted.

'Because we can't.' she pointed out. I stared into her eyes. I leaned in closer to her and a thick static filled the air. I swear if I had a knife I would cut the air. I looked into her eyes, there was something mesmerizing about them. Something, almost like recognition, flashed in her eyes. And she looked away. She blinked a couple times and opened the door. She looked flustered and upset, yet happy at the same time.

'I don't think this is going to work...' she muttered.

'We can make it work.' I said.

'I don't want it to.' she said. And then she was gone.
