ONLY YOU by 112 ft Biggie Smalls was playing softly in the background as Loyal and Essence reached their climax together."Damn," Loyal groaned, pulling out of Essence and tossing the condom aside. He nutted on her stomach, still rubbing her clit. "Fuckkk," Essence moaned, her eyes rolling back as she rode out her climax. Once finished, Loyal walked to his bathroom, grabbed a towel, and came back to the room to clean off Essence.
"Lemme take you home before yo' momma beat my ass again," Loyal said, grabbing a pair of boxers out of his dresser and tossing some sweatpants at Essence to wear. Once they finished getting dressed, Loyal grabbed his keys and walked out of his apartment, with Essence following behind him as they made their way to Loyal's car.
The car ride was quiet, neither of them wanting to talk about the state of their relationship. They had been together since the beginning of their junior year of high school, and now, having graduated only two months ago. She noticed how Loyal had changed over the past couple of months. He was quieter, kept to himself more, and they had been arguing more because of it. Every time Essence tried to bring it up or understand why he was being so distant, Loyal would just shrug it off and say he was fine and everything is good.
But in reality, Loyal was dealing with things he didn't want Essence to know. He was unintentionally pushing her away, not because he wanted to, but because he felt he had to. He cared for her so much that he didn't want to be the reason for her pain.
They finally pulled up to Essence's house and sat in the car, the darkness of the night surrounding them, until Loyal spoke up.
"You know I love you for real, E," Loyal said, turning to face her.
"Don't seem like it lately. Every time I try to be there for you or ask you what's wrong, you just keep shutting me out," Essence said, picking at her nails.
"I'm really not," Loyal sighed, rubbing his hands his down face.
"You are, though. You act like I don't know you or somethin'. These past couple of months, I've been trying in this relationship, and I'm tired. But I love you so much that I don't wanna give up on us," Essence said, finally getting off her chest how she's been feeling.
"So that's how you've been feelin'? I feel like you're suffocatin' me, always tryin' to push yo'self on me. When I say I'm fine, I'm fine, E. All you do is argue with me about it. How I'm not the same, how I've changed, how distant I'm supposedly being-which ain't true. And it's drainin' as fuck," Loyal said seriously, leaning back in his seat.
"You're drained? Fucking ironic. What about me, Loyal? It feels like don't give two shits about me and how I feel and it fucking sucks," she said, tears welling up in her eyes.
"See, here you go again. No need to cry." Loyal shook his head, catching her tears before they fell. "You told me how you feel, and now I'm tellin' you how I feel, and you're gettin' upset," he said. After a few moments, he spoke up again. "Maybe we need to take a breather, a pause before things get unhealthy, E."
"You just givin' up just like that, huh? I know you been through some shit, but so have I. But you givin' up on us is so fuckin' wack, Loyal. Knowin' I've been tryin' to make this work, and you're just takin' the easy way out; running away," Essence said now with tears streaming down her face.
Loyal hated seeing her cry, but knowing he was the cause of her tears hurt him more. He didn't want to do this; he loved her deeply, and this was the last thing he wanted to do. But Essence couldn't see that, and he had to make this decision before their relationship went further downhill.
"Bruh, E, don't cry," he said, reaching to wipe her tears, but she pushed his hand away.
"Nah, don't touch me. You said you wanted a break? Fine, I'ma give you a fuckin' break. You ain't gonna hear from me or see me, you don't gotta worry bout me imma be good," she said, getting out of the car and slamming the door.
She walked into her house trying not to wake up her mother, feeling defeated and abandoned. Loyal had been her rock, her safe place, since she was 16 and now she felt like she was left with nothing.
Loyal could only shake his head. He didn't want it to end like this; he saw it as just a pause, a chance for him to get his shit together. Since graduation, he'd imagined a real future with Essence.
As he drove away, he reached the end of the street when a cop car with flashing lights suddenly appeared and pulled in behind him.
"What the fuck," Loyal whispered, pulling over to the side.
From her window, Essence watched in stunned silence, trying to make sense of what was happening despite the darkness. Her mind raced through all the things Loyal might have done that could have led to this moment, but she couldn't think of anything.
"Loyal Walker," the cop said, approaching his car. "There's a warrant for your arrest for possession of illegal drugs and weapons. Step out of the car, please." The officer's words hit Loyal like a ton of bricks as he complied and stepped out of the vehicle. Essence saw him being placed in the backseat of the police car, her heart sinking as the gravity of the situation settled in.
