"You never sent me your schedule girl!" My best friend complained as she got into my car. She tossed her bright blue backpack towards the backseat like she did throughout all of last year when I drove her to school too, and set her Dunkin iced coffee down into the cupholder between us. Immediately after, she unlocked her phone and, presumably, pulled up her schedule.

"Okay, let me know when you hear one of these classes," she commanded as she held her phone in her right hand and took a sip of her iced coffee with the other.

"Hmmm... maybe I will if you put on your seatbelt Vi," I looked at her with a jokingly-mad look.

"Always looking out for me," she laughed as she pulled the belt across her lap. She let out a sigh and re-unlocked her phone to begin asking me questions. As I switched the gear from park to drive, she began listing her classes for senior year in order.

"Okay, for period one I have English IV," Violet paused for my response.

"No."

"Alright then. Period two I have AP Chem."

"With which teacher? I have chem second period too but with Ms. Hange."

"Same! Looks like we have chem together," she triumphantly smiled as she took another sip. "Okay, period three I have gym class, you?"

"Nah, women's health."

"Are you serious? Instead of kicking a ball around, you decided to take a health class?" She groaned and scrolled down.

I let out a small laugh. Violet Springer has been my best friend since the beginning of freshman year. We met at Maria High during the freshman orientation and found each other as familiar faces during our first history class. From then on, we became really close.

But we are very different. While Violet is all kickass and ruthless, I am more of the laid-back type. Don't get me wrong, we do have similar interests; it's just that I tend to have a more chill attitude towards life. And, just so everyone knows, this is her fourth year in a row taking PE. I would rather learn more about my body in women's health than play dodgeball with ruthless teenage boys.

"Period four I am stuck in the delightful hands of Mr. Pat for AP Calculus. Please, please, please, please say you also have this class!" She groaned as we pulled up to a red light.

I looked over at her with sorry eyes, and put my hand on her shoulder. "I'm sorry-"

"Oh god, don't even finish the sentence," she put her hands up in my face. "I don't even want to think about how bored I am going to be in that old hag's class. He's so mean and condescending, I'm afraid I'll smack him at least once before the year is over."

I gave her a reassuring squeeze on her shoulder before I had to divert my attention back to the road to continue our journey to Maria High.

"Hey, don't even start complaining. You know what I have that period?" I glanced at her. "AP Lit with Mr. Fucking Collins. I'm lucky if I can get a B in his class this year."

"Looks like we'll both be suffering. That makes me feel a bit better. We'll have to make sure to text each other during fourth period so we don't suffer alone. Whenever Mr. Pat says something that gets on my nerves, I'll send you an update. And you can complain about how many essays you have to write for Mr. Collins." In my peripheral vision, I watched as Violet dramatically flipped her hair out of her face and took a deep breath in, then out. "Moving on, what lunch do you have?"

As I turned the corner into Maria's parking lot (barely making it through without causing a crash might I add), I said, "I have lunch two. You?"

"Yes! Same! This is going to be such a good year. We haven't had the same lunch since freshman year," Violet smiled as she sipped her Dunkin.

I pulled into my parking spot which was very, very far from the entrance to the school. Setting the gear in park, I looked up at my high school building and took it all in.

'Maria High' is the private school in Violet and I's town. Located in Shiganshina, Maria High's mascot is the Mustang because, well, I don't know.

Maria's towering presence is no joke. Resembling almost a castle, the founders repurposed this from an old fortress to a renaissance-style masterpiece. Fitting for all the people here who acted like miniature kings and queens. Violet and I bonded over the fact that our parents sent us here out of the sheer fact that we absolutely did not want to attend our public school here. We'd rather spend our days locked in with primadonnas than with the dangerous presence of gang-related activity down at Shiganshina High. Safety trumps comfortability. Besides, it's not all that bad. It's like any other high school -- besides the fact that some of the kids here are literally loaded. But as long as I have my friend group, my school days are fine.

I looked over at Violet while I unbuckled myself: she was putting on mascara using the passenger seat mirror. I pulled down the sun visor above my head too, and checked how I looked in the mini mirror. For the first day of senior year, I put on light makeup -- anymore and I would have sweat it off. I was wearing the Maria school uniform: a gray button down with a forest green tie (the color signifies my grade level: senior), and a light brown khaki skirt that, I'll be honest, I got tailored to be very short. What can I say, it's senior year, I want to live my best life. I wore brown Converse shoes that matched my skirt, and white lacy socks. I thought I looked pretty good.

I put my visor back up, satisfied with my appearance, and turned my keys out of ignition.

"Ready?" I asked Violet. She looked up at me while drinking her iced coffee, and put a finger up to signal one more minute. I laughed and shook my head, and got out of the car. I opened up the backseat driver's door and grabbed hold of my backback, slinging it over my shoulder. I shut both doors, and made my way over to Violet's side. Grabbing her bag, I shut the back door then opened the front door for my best friend.

"How kind," she said as she took her bag from my hand. As I began to walk towards the entrance to Maria High, Violet grabbed the back of my bag.

"Wait!" She looked at me. Did I forget something?

I watched as she pulled out her phone and stood right next me.

"First day of school selfie y/n!"

I laughed as she held the camera up in front of our faces. I held up a peace sign and smiled.

I watched as a giddy Violet looked down at her phone to send me the selfie, and when she was finally ready, we started walking towards our school building.

I'll make this a memorable senior year, I promised myself.
