It's been a few years now since (Y/N) and I got married. Maddie is now fourteen and I've defiantly become a protective older brother to her when she started her teen years. I just want her to be safe and out of danger. But I can't do that now because our parents have signed her up for Shiz University so she'll be away for a while. I was making sure she had everything before she left. If anything, I was stalling to spend more time with her. She assured me that she had everything and that she'll be fine.
Goodness, I feel like a parent. Speaking of, I still need to talk to (Y/N) about that. It's been five years so I think we're ready for our own children. But I have to ask if she's ready first. I was about to send Maddie off to University when Tinman ran over. What in the Land of Oz is he doing here? I didn't invite him. Turns out Maddie told him about going to University and he wanted to say goodbye. What's going on here? Why would she tell Tinman and no one else? He gave her a goodbye gift before the carriage took her to Shiz.
"What was that about?" I asked Tinman
"What was what about?" Tinman asked
"That! The whole interaction before Maddie left!"
"We're best friends. We send letters to each other and spend time together almost every day. Is there a problem with that?"
"She's my sister! And she never mentioned anything about you two being friends!"
"We've been friends since you proposed to (Y/N). You have to stop being so protective of her. She's not a child anymore."
I sighed. He's right and I hate to admit it. I went back inside the palace to finish some of the work I need to get done. I would've gone to speak with (Y/N) but she's doing her Queen duties. She was crowned Queen about a year after we were married and I don't think Oz has ever had a better Queen. She's been doing great and she really suits the Oz Crown.
I was offered one when I became King but I didn't like it. My hat seems more recognizable to the people anyway and I want to be my own king. Not that I know how well I've done with that so far. I was finishing up a few more papers when I felt a pair of arms wrap around my neck. I know who this is.
"Hello, darling," I said smiling
"Hey, Scarecrow," (Y/N) said smiling, "How's Oz doing?"
"As smoothly as I can make it. And Maddie is gone for a while."
"Where has she gone?" (Y/N) asked letting go of me
"Shiz University to learn how to do... well, what I'm doing but for the Winkie Country. Because I'm here, Maddie is the heir of Winkie country now."
"That makes sense. And I know you're worried for her but she'll be fine. If she can survive seven years without you, she can survive a few years at school without you."
"I know but can you blame me? And I just learned that she and Tinman have had a secret friendship for the past few years now. They hang out and send letters to each other and I never even knew."
"Scarecrow, she's old enough to make her own choices without you looking over her shoulder. Give her some space, okay?"
I just nodded. I finished the last of my papers before talking with (Y/N) about her day and how mine's gone so far. She even helped me cheer up by showing me a picture she had saved of her when she was a child. It was safe to say I freaked out over seeing a tiny precious child (Y/N). Well, she is still a tiny precious child. I said that out loud and I got a playful push for that comment. I don't regret that. But I looked at it closer and started imagining if our child would like her.
Now I'm back on this silly subject. Even if Glinda's spell would work, how would (Y/N) feel about it? Well, just asking myself this won't get me any real answers. So, I told her what Glinda said she would do for us and asked if she was ready for children. She seemed to know why I was thinking about it so much. She said I had something called 'Baby Fever'. At first, I thought it was an illness even though I can't get sick until she explained that it's a condition in the head that makes you long to have children of your own.
It happens to everyone and it can go away. I guess how she's been explaining it, I do have Baby Fever. I'll just be walking through Emerald City and I'll see a child and wish I could be the parent in the situation I would be looking at. I didn't really think about it until now. As I was thinking about this, (Y/N) spoke up saying that she was ready for a child and would like to give magic a go. So, I took her to Glinda where she first asked for a strand of (Y/N)'s hair and a bit of my straw.
I obviously had my concerns about that but Glinda explained that's the only kind of DNA I have so I need to give her one to make this child. So, I let her have a bit and Glinda performed her magic. The hair and strand of straw bonded together before turning into a little ball of light. That ball of light floated to (Y/N) and entered her body. Glinda then explained that the magic part was done and now we had to wait the normal nine months for a child to be born. That was easy!
But that whole nine months, I wondered to myself if the magic was really done. Every moment of the process was magic to me. I read all about the pregnancy process and I did everything the book recommended to do. I looked after (Y/N), I gave both her and the child all my attention, and I helped her make a baby room for when the time came.
But what I think they both liked was when I read to them. Of course, (Y/N) would normally fall asleep on my shoulder but I'd keep reading for the baby. I can't wait to do this when I finally meet them. I never thought I'd ever become a father but I'm ready to make the most of it. I'll be the best father I can be. I won't let them or (Y/N) down.
