I twirled the wax sealer around in my hand, staring down angrily at the letter that sits before me. Pathetic. I was pathetic to still have such a weakness within me.
"If looks could kill madame that invitation would surely be dead by now," my maid, Mimi, quipped, giggling lightly and giving my shoulder a friendly pat at she got back to her dusting. My lips pursed in frustration and I finally put the wax sealer down, letting out a long sigh.
"Still falling for him I suppose?" My butler, Ucha, teased, leaning against my doorway and peering in.
"Shut up you two! Before I fire you both!" I barked, grabbing the letter from my desk and crumpling it.
"Tsk tsk someone is touchy about a certain Phantomhive boy," Ucha remarked, giving me that insufferable smirk he knew I hated. Despite my annoyance, I couldn't help but feel the familiar warmth in my cheeks that arose every time I thought about him. Ciel. Ciel Phantomhive. A boy most mysterious and cold, a boy who I'd been trying and failing to catch the attention of for years now. It's likely he didn't even remember the way he saved me that day, but it's quite impossible for me to forget.
"Madame are you going to go?" Mimi asked, once again placing her hand on my shoulder and giving me a look of pure concern. I hesitated, looking at the crumpled letter and letting the memories I locked up flow through my mind like a cold stream would flow through the forest. My father, yelling and yelling and yelling. My mother, weeping and weeping and weeping. And finally myself, cold and shivering and oh so young. Ciel...
"Yes. Yes I believe I will attend," I murmured, swiftly standing from my chair and crossing the room to my wardrobe. Out of the corner of my eye I could see Mimi and Ucha exchange concerned glances, but I paid them no mind.
Though my mind was elsewhere, my body still picked a stunning crushed velvet dress the color of the midnight sky. I stayed in this state of disassociation the entire time Mimi helped me dress, not even sparing a word or two for the sake of easing my servants concerns. Once dressed, I silently climbed into the carriage Ucha had brought around.
"A ball," Ucha mused as we rode towards the manor, "it is quite unusual for the lord to host a ball. Do you think this could be the work of his betrothed?"
Ucha knew the mention of Lady Elizabeth would elicit some sort of reaction out of me and I appreciated his efforts. It couldn't completely pull me from the flood, but it was enough. I rolled my eyes, shooting a glare at him. He pretended to be shot, dramatically flailing about and making pained noises. I couldn't help but laugh at him and his ridiculousness.
"There's that smile! Make sure to keep it out as you'll need it. Nobody wants to speak with someone who looks so moody," Ucha joked, though the smile he gave me was genuine.
It wasn't to much longer before the carriage was stopping infront of the famous Phantomhive manor and Ucha was escorting me inside. The manor was elaborate decorated, looking as if it had come straight from a fairytale. It's perfectness was almost eerie, sending a warning throughout my body to be cautious and alert.
People swarmed all around, chatting and dancing and eating. All of them, in their own little world. Yet none of them were as detached as the Lord himself. Ciel sat at a table at the head of the room, looking incredibly bored. His butler stood not very far from him, his crimson eyes scanning the crowd with suspicion though he wore a pleasant smile on his lips. Or should I say Ciel's demon? I knew from the moment we had set foot in the same room that Ciel had a demon. What I didn't know, however, was why.
"Lady (Y/N)! Lady (Y/N)! Welcome! Welcome! I'm so glad you could make it!" I heard a shrill voice exclaim from behind me. Ah. I would know that voice anywhere. Lady Elizabeth rushed to greet me, curtsying and giving me the biggest grin I had ever seen one person give another.
"Ah Lady Elizabeth. A pleasure as always. So I see this is a product of your doing?" I replied, giving her a small curtsy back as a show of mutual respect. Sure, I may not have exactly liked her, but if I were to disrespect someone so openly I would surely be the talk of the town for weeks, even months to come. My reputation could not take such damage.
"You may call me Lizzy if you like! All my friends do! And yes, yes it is! I'm so glad you could make it to mine and Ciel's engagement party!"
