CASSANDRA THORNWORTH WAS LETHAL. Her use of poison won her the 67th Hunger Games, but she was never the same after. (Although no survivor of the Games were.) The boy from the 65th Hunger Games, who had won two years before, Finnick Odair, was the only one who could even talk to her without an icy glare.
As she warmed up to him, the Capitol twisted their relationship into a little more. Caesar Flickerman called them "the power couple we've been waiting for!" and damned their whole relationship to be seen as nothing but a couple.
That was what everyone else thought, but they didn't think that way. Word of their "relationship" spread far & wide across Panem, and soon they were known as a "picture perfect" couple, their photographs on magazine covers in Districts One & Two, visits to the Capitol. They erased the images of Cass's twisted smile as she puts poison in District Five's food. They erased the images of Finnick splattered with blood, & images where he's hugging Annie close.
Finnick was tired of people thinking they were a couple. But for Cass? She was stuck in the friend zone, with no way out. Until they're sentenced to a fate that means death or the slimmest chance of rescue. Then she sees her chance. The last one she might ever get.
