You'd think as Elle made her way closer and closer to Carl's room, millions of little thoughts would be racing through her head and she'd be overthinking every single on of them. Surprisingly, her mind was blank. Not a single thought went through her head, and that could be just as bad.
Their doors are only about four feet apart, yet it felt like four miles instead. When she did eventually reach the door, a few thoughts started trickling in. They were just nerves, should I do this? I should just go back to bed. It was just a nightmare, I'm sure I can handle it.
Elle pushed the thoughts away and decided to just go for it. She slowly turned the doorknob and tried to quietly open the door, only hoping it doesn't squeak. Apparently, she didn't hope enough, because a small creek broke the silence and she mentally scolded herself.
"Elle?" Shit.
"Yeah, it's me. Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you up- I'll go." She whispered, not trying to wake anybody else up as she turned around to head back to her room.
"No, it's fine. My dream was taking a turn for the worse anyways." He sighed. "Why are you here?" He questioned why the girl was in his room in the middle of the night.
"Just had a nightmare was all, I- I wasn't thinking, I can still go." She offered again, starting to make her way out as well.
"No, you don't have too. I know you won't fall asleep again." He shrugged, hinting that he wanted her to stay.
He couldn't see it due to how dark the room was, but she gave him a small smile as she closed the door. Once she successfully closed the door without making any noise, she made her way over to the bed as Carl moved over, giving her a spot.
She lifted the dark blue comforter, letting herself get on the bed. She settled herself and lied down with her back facing Carl's and her front facing the window. Letting out a sigh, something happened that should've happened a few minutes ago;
All the thoughts started rolling in.
But it didn't stop at her wondering if she should go into his room, no. They went back to earlier that day, to when she snapped at the boy who lied barely two feet away from her.
Was he upset about that? Maybe he felt bad, that wasn't her intention. She doesn't even know if she had any intentions. What if he was mad? No, if he was mad, he probably would've turned her away when she came into his room. No matter what he was feeling, she wouldn't know because he didn't respond. Either that, or she didn't give him a chance to. What if he wanted to, and she just stormed off before he could?
Now she wanted to know, she needed to know.
Once again, not thinking, she acted. "Carl?" She asked quietly, seeing if he was still awake. After a few awkward seconds of silence, she got a response.
"Yeah?" His voice was raspy, proving how tired he was.
"Are you upset about earlier?" She asked him, rolling onto her back to stare at the ceiling. He started shifting around to also lay on his back. His breath hitched when their arms now lied touching each other, though neither of them moved.
"I guess I should ask you that." He responded, followed by a small chuckle.
"Well I snapped at you and I shouldn't have. I'm sorry." She apologized.
"It's okay, I kind of had it coming." He yawned. "I was being secretive and I have a reason that's a little embarrassing and I would rather not say outloud." She could hear the smile on his face as he talked, causing her to smile.
