Thank you to @WafflesOfSorrow for the request. This was a fun one to write and it took me a bit of researching to try and understand how skating and skating safely on lakes work. I hope you guys find this chapter enjoyable!
December 26, 2021 (edit)
I reread this after a week of publishing it and grew to hate it to the point that I wanted to rewrite it. That brings us to this note. I have rewritten this chapter and tried to improve it to the best that I can. For some reason, my writing style changes from time to time and I can't accurately write it the way I want so it may take a few trials and errors before I'm finally satisfied with what I have written. For this reason, I would like to say I'm sorry because what I have previously delivered was not on par on what I wanted the chapter to be.
Through the pinewood forest and the long barren stretches of snow and ice, a small village sits blanketed in white. Small puffs of smoke floated out of the chimneys and were blown away by the chilly air outside. It's residences work tirelessly outside, clearing the snow from their yards and hammering down the fallen fences that surrounded and protected their houses. Tubbo walled through the stone-paved path through the small village, passing by and being greeted by some of the locals who recognized him alone the way.
Aside from Tubbo's short horns and a small L'manberg flag that was patched and stitched to his jacket, almost all of the residences' attire are the same. As the stone-paved path slowly transitioned back to dirt and snow, Tubbo arrived at a lone cabin near a frozen lake. Outside the cabin was a welcome sign and a shovel that was stick deep into a pile of snow. Tubbo pushed the door gently, the door chimes alerting and making a noise. Inside the shop were winter equipment frequently used by the locals, such as ropes, nails, shovels, and boots. There were also weapons used to hunt and help the locals get their meal for the day.
The owner inside sat quietly behind the counter where he he drank his coffee and read the morning newspaper. Tubbo took a few packs of bullets, a few packs of nails, and a few packs of seeds to plant in the greenhouse. As Tubbo placed the items on the counter he noticed a pair of ice skates placed on the top of the shelf behind the old man. "Are they being sold?" Tubbo asked as he pointed at the skates, the old man looked behind him and took the pair of skates "They aren't, but you can have it." The old man wore a sad smile as reached for another pair of skates under the counter. "These skates are for you and that tall lad you were with a few days ago." He chuckled as he placed it on the counter. "These skates were previously used by me and my wife when we were your age, but as you can see, time had already taken and affected the both of us. Take these skates and use them together with that tall lad you were with a few days ago. Take it as a sign of gratitude for your continued patronage to this shop."
A stream of light entered through the curtains previously drawn to the side before Tubbo left. Ranboo slowly opened his eyes and used his arm to feel the side of the bed, looking for his husband only to give up and look over and see that his husband had already left to do his morning walk. Rubbing his eyes, he got up and started to fix the bed before taking a shower and heading downstairs to prepare breakfast for the two of them. The sound of the stove turned on and the sizzle of meat on the pan can be heard in the kitchen, this kitchen was barely used by Tubbo and was regularly used by Ranboo to cook meals for the both of them. Reaching for the plates at the top shelf and slowly placing the freshly cooked meal. The sound of the door softly creaking and soft steps on the carpet alerted Ranboo that Tubbo was back from his morning walk. Tubbo hung his coat on the coat rack before making his way towards the kitchen where the scent of warm coffee whiffed through the air. "Good morning Ranboo." Tubbo greeted as he made his way at the bottom cabinets and stored the items in. "Good morning Tubbo." Ranboo greeted back as he gently placed a cup of coffee on the table along with today's breakfast.
The two had a quiet meal together as they listened to the radio about the weather news in Snowchester. 'Cloudy skies in the morning, afternoon and snowfall in the evening' it says like every other day. "Hey, Ranboo remember that old man you met a few days ago? Tubbo asked, his voice almost like a soft whisper "Yes, I do." Ranboo looked away from his itinerary and directed his attention to Tubbo. "Well, he gave us a pair of ice skates, I was wondering if you would like to go ice skating with me?" Tubbo rarely talks about other things other than Snowchester so talking about other things made him nervous. If Ranboo says 'no' he might not try it himself, Tubbo can't help but purse his lips and start grasping at his own hands. Ranboo looked at Tubbo whose eyes held an expectant gaze "Well, I don't know if my body can handle balancing on I've but..." He sheepishly smiled "We can go skating tomorrow." Ranboo agreed as he watched Tubbo adorn a smile. After the meal, Tubbo washed the dishes while Ranboo inspected the ice skates that his husband bought. "You should wear it and see if it fits you, if it doesn't I'm gonna make some adjustments," Tubbo mentioned as he looked to his side and watched Ranboo put his foot in the skates. The man was using the wall as support and managed to balance himself, he looked satisfied when he stood straight his tail swinging from side to side.
Wiping his hands after washing the dishes, Tubbo made his way towards the smaller ice skates and tried to put them on. A hum of satisfaction can be heard as he managed to put it on. 'Surprisingly just right' Tubbo thought as he balanced on his foot and walked towards Ranboo who was smiling at him.The next morning the sun was just beginning to rise as the clouds covered the sky. Beneath was a barren snow-covered field with a lake and a few trees along the side. A short man was standing atop the ice watching the taller man tie his laces. Tubbo smiled and reached out to take Ranboo's hand and assist him on the ice. His husband's leg shook and his tail was doing it's best to stabilize him. Tubbo watched his husband's panicked expression and found it amusing before he decided to hold both of Ranboo's hand tightly and guide him around the edge of the lake.
When Ranboo was able to grasp it, he smiled and turned to look at Tubbo, a look that says 'I did it' was plastered on his face. Gently loosening his tight grip on Tubbo's hand, he was slowly pulled away from the edge and was led to the center. His hands were gently released by Tubbo allowing Ranboo to freely skate in his own pace, while Tubbo slowly skated around him. The clouds parted and allowed small patches of light to fall on the lake. The cold landscape was given color and the previously clear blue ice on the lake became even clearer. Tubbo skated back to his husband who stood admiring the view on the horizon and stopped beside him, occasionally looking at Ranboo's face to admire the man. Feeling a stare on his face Ranboo turned to look at Tubbo whose eyes widened from the sudden eye contact. Ranboo slowly brought his hands up and cupped the smaller man's face. A nice warm shade of red was on his husband's cheeks emitting warmth unto his cold hands. He couldn't help but grow fond of this man everytime he sees him, he had already become someone that wanted to protect and cherish this Tubbo for the days they remain together. The scar marks on his husband's face was a reminder that his husband is someone to be cared for be shown that he is worthy of these his affections. How he wished that Tubbo can live a peaceful life with him forever.
Ranboo didn't know how long he stared at his husband's face and was interrupted when Tubbo held his hands. Tubbo seemed to be pouting and removed one if his gloves to wear it on Ranboo's ungloved hand. "Are you using my face to warm your hands? What are you doing?" Tubbo asked as he shot a questioning gaze at Ranboo while he used his ungloved hand to hold his husband's other. Ranboo who was suddenly snapped out of his thoughts became flustered and embarrassingly confessed his thoughts "I was admiring you." He blurted out as he tried to look away. Tubbo looked at the blushing tall man in front of him and gently head bumps his head into Ranboo's stomach before looking away. Feeling a little embarrassed by what he heard from the man, he led the man around the ice.
A wide smile erupted from Tubbo's face as he skated around with his husband while holding each other's hand, giggling as he slowly let go of the other hand and watched his husband slip and fall on his back. Tubbo skated to his husband's side trying to compress and stop his laugh, his husband's face was full of disbelief but was turned into a smile. "I think it's time for us to head back." Ranboo proposed while being helped up by a smiling Tubbo who bursted out laughing as Ranboo tried to hug him to stop his laugh.
