We were at school. I was waiting for the Cullen’s to come out with Bella. She finally accepted that I wasn’t going to stay away.
The bell rings and students exit class. They rushed by us while we waited.
Finally the Cullen’s come out. Jack’s eyes met mine. I kept a blank face as I turned and walked away expecting him to follow me. He did. I heard his light footsteps following me.
I walked to the forest. A different part from Edward and Bella. I walked a ways before stopping. I didn’t turn around as I tried to process everything.
“You’re impossibly fast. And strong. Your skin is pale-white, ice-cold. Your eyes change color. And sometimes you speak like…you’re from a different time.”
I turned to face him.
“You never eat food or drink, or come out in the sunlight. And you said no to the beach trip only after you heard where it was. Because of the treaty”
I step closer to him.
“How old are you?”
“Twenty”
“How long have you been twenty?”
There was a long beat.
“A while”
I inhale. I knew but it’s still shocking.
“I know what you are”
“Say it. Out loud. Say it”
“Vampire”
“Are you afraid?”
“No”
“Then ask me the most basic question: what do we eat?”
“You won’t hurt me. You’ve hugged me close to you before. I know you won’t hurt me”
“You think you know me?”
He glares at me. I hold my ground. Suddenly, he takes me by the hand. We start walking.
“Where are we going?”
“Up the mountain. Out of the cloud bank. You need to see what I really am. What I look like in the sunlight”
He abruptly and effortlessly scoop me up into his arms.
“Hold on”
He then flings me onto his back…and starts running.
