Kabanata 1

"...at naniniwala po ako sa kasabihang, "Sobrang baba man ang grade ko sa core subjects kaya bagsak last year, mataas naman ang tagay ko ng beer." And I, thank you!" The guy who's in front of the class bowed. He was the last one to introduce himself to the class.

Nagkantyawan ang mga kaklase namin dahil sa huli niyang sinabi. Ngumiti na lang ako. All of them seemed to be close to each other kahit first day of class pa lang. I already introduced myself in front and they were all nice to me. I told them my full name, age, and hobbies. Nabanggit ko rin sa harapan na homeschooled ako pero may favorite subject ako at 'yon ay Filipino.

It is really nice to expand your knowledge in your mother tongue. You just don't learn simple lessons or find out uncommon things, but also enrich your own language and culture. While it is true that our country has a downer society and poor economy, it is wealthy in distinct ways that some people don't realize. At least learning Filipino genuinely will make you appreciate a lot of things from your nation.

"Ang talino mo siguro, 'no?" Napatingin ako sa katabi ko. She leaned on me as she said that. I think her name is Darlene.

"Eh... hindi naman po." I chuckled. "Paano mo naman po nasabi? Ang tahimik ko kaya."

"'Yun na nga, 'te! Tahimik ka sa klase so I assume pagdating sa written works, or even recitation, g ka!" Ngumisi siya. "I'm Darlene, by the way. Ako 'yung unang nag-introduce kanina, in case you already forgot."

"No, naaalala ko pa po," I affirmed her. "I'm Winter po pala."

"Please, para akong sinasapak sa 'po' mo! Mas matanda ka kaya sa akin!" She laughed. Oo nga pala.

Si Darlene ang una kong naging kaibigan sa klase. It wasn't awkward around her. She makes me really comfortable and doesn't make me feel alone. We're both the sunshine type of person but she's more loquacious than I am. Madaldal din ako pero mas hindi siya nauubusan ng kuwento kaya mataman lang akong nakikinig sa mga sinasabi niya. She really talks a lot.

Hindi ako nagsising HUMSS ang napili kong strand. Well, my parents were the ones who chose it for me but I'm also in favor of it. I fit into this strand. Gustong-gusto ko ang mga ginagawa namin at ito talaga ang type ko. Except na lang sa Physical Education. Masaya naman ang P.E. dahil may extracurricular activities din na nagaganap but to be honest, I'm not into sports. Hindi naman dahil clumsy ako, pero hirap na kasi akong maging sporty type dahil nasanay na 'kong nasa bahay. I can write essays all day long but I can't run as fast as my classmates. Sa karerang ginawa namin na activity last time, ako ang pinakahuling nakaabot sa finish line. Ayoko na!

"Towel oh," inabutan ako ni Darlene ng spare towel niya.

Nagpunas agad ako ng pawis sa noo. Volleyball ang activity namin ngayon. Pormang-porma pa ang jersey ko dahil nga P.E. namin, but I can't even score a lot. Kung tutuusin, madali lang naman matuto ng volleyball. Ewan, ang hirap kasi tumira ng bola para sa akin.

"Activity niyo pa lang 'to dahil sa topic na Recreational Activities. Pero sa susunod ay magiging competition na 'to against other sections," our P.E. and Health teacher, Sir Alvin, told us.

"Ta's ano 'yon, cher? Kung anong section ang mananalo sa isang strand, 'yun po ang ilalaban sa iba pang strand?" tanong ni Jared.

Tumango si Sir. "Oo, magiging performance task niyo na rin sa akin ang competition na 'yon sa finals ng grade 11. Kaya dapat nagsasanay na kayo."

"Volleyball lang po? Wala pong iba na sport po na pwedeng salihan?" I asked. Para kasi sa akin ay medyo mas madali ang badminton.

"May iba pa namang pwedeng salihan. It's up to you, kung saang sport kayo mag-e-excel," he answered. I thanked him.
