Janae woke up from her nap. She's still tired but the position that she's in was making her uncomfortable. Everyone was asleep except for Mae. Suddenly, she had an idea but it would require an extra person

She walked over to Mae with hesitation in her steps. "What's wrong, Janae?" Mae asked. "I have a request..." Janae started

Mae turned around to face the teenager standing in front of her. "Go on" Mae folded her arms. "I've been having problems with my hair lately and I want to restart, I want to cut it off, well at least some of it. And I thought I could have someone that has the same background as me to help me with my hair"

"I would love to help you, darling. Come, I have clippers in the bathroom" Mae leads Janae to the bathroom. While Mae was finding the clippers, Janae looked at herself in the mirror, it was finally happening

"Oh darn, I don't have them anymore. Guess we'll have to do it the old-fashioned way" Mae held up some scissors. Mae patted a chair as Janae sits in it

"You know, my mom used to do my hair, I remember the hot comb phase. Whew!" Mae laughed. "Yeah, that was not a good phase" Janae chuckled

"May I ask why you want to cut your hair?" She asked. "I'm getting tired of it-" Janae got cut off when Mae tried to detangle her hair with her fingers and it yanked Janae's head back

"Oh my, I see what you mean. May I give you some advice, dear?" Mae asked. Janae nodded her head "As a black woman, I've always found it hard to keep my hair tamed but starting over is the best thing you can do. Trust me, you're doing the right thing. And if it's because of anything else, I suggest to not let anyone stop you from doing you"

Janae is glad to hear about that. "You ready?" Mae asked once more. "I'm ready" Just like that, Mae began cutting. Both of them watched as hair fell to the ground

A few minutes go by and the sound of the scissors stops. "There we go, hun. Now, would you like it styled in any way?"

"Could you possibly do mini twists?" She asks. "Of course!" Mae got straight to work. Janae let Mae handle everything. A few minutes go away and Janae felt Mae's hands lift off her head "How bout that, love?"

Janae looked up at the masterpiece on top of her hair, she loved it. "I love it. Oh, thank you so much, Mae!" She got up out of the seat to hug Mae

"You're welcome. Now if you don't mind, I need to get back to work" As Mae walked out, a tear slips out of Janae's eye.

She read somewhere that cutting your hair is a period of transition that can reduce difficult emotions and stress. She felt the emotion leave her body as if she was reborn

After that, Janae decided to go eat something. She successfully made herself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. But once she got the items out, she looked down at the sandwich

It reminded her of her cousin Khadijah. Every other summer, she would go to Texas to visit her favorite cousin. Khadijah would make fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for them with a side of pineapple Italian ice

They would eat their snacks on top of their family's lake house patio. Janae missed her cousin so much, ever since Nola died, Khadijah made a promise to treat and take care of Janae like a sister

"Kids, I made a breakthrough!" Mae suddenly says. Janae finished eating her sandwich to go check what Mae meant.

Everyone was awake now. Once Janae came around the corner, Kenji stared at her in awe "You cut your hair?"

"You like it?" She asked him. He didn't answer, he just looked intrigued by her new hairstyle. "Okay, after careful analysis of the nutrient samples, I've discovered alarmingly high levels of receptor antagonists, as well as adrenal additives. These must be the cause of the elevated combative state of the animals who've ingested them" Mae explained
