It was rather ironic, really, but Samantha Rojas desperately yearned to be a skeptic.

Ever since she could remember, she'd been obsessed — she prefers the term fascinated — with the unprovable. Her doe eyes would be glued to pages upon pages of mythical creatures and their half-human counterparts. Dramatic lore and folk tales were stored in her mind like a bestiary. 

Though along the way, they became less and less appealing.

There was no one reason why the Rojas girl's wonder dimmed, it was more like a mixture of things. The disappearance of her parents at a young age certainly had a hand in such. Then came the taunting from classmates as she got older and the childlike wonder was no longer a cute quirk. The world didn't take kindly to believers and optimists.

Nor did it take kindly to trespassers and thieves.

Which is exactly what Sam had been deemed by the Beacon Hills Police Department. If there was a ever a time where she wished, begged, for a miracle, it would've been the time she got caught breaking into the old Whittemore place. There was a perfectly reasonable explanation, of course. But her conviction met its match in the impatient officers that scoffed at her rambling.

Apparently, nobody believed in fiery lizard creatures.

Not only was she fined $800, but she was also slammed with community service. With that, her unconditional love for All-Things-Otherworldly had reached its limit, the title stripped away like plaster on a fresh wound. There was nothing more she wished for than to be cynical.

So the last thing she needed was to get tangled up with a bunch of half-human strangers in some kind of supernatural hit-list, let alone having a crush on a newly-turned werewolf.
