The Promise

Just as she had promised, the giant figure broke through the trees so silently towards them. Hilda had sent the pack to fetch him and told Thomas and Greta that if anything happened they should wait at the special tree and he would come.

They had never met him, but remembered the stories told to them every night before bed. The stories of the Guardian, the one who will protect you if anything should happen to the village.
Something had happened, something horrible.

The pack had been sent at the first sign of them, then Hilda had grabbed our arms and told us to hide with the other children and not come out until there was silence for a good two hours. Then, and only then, could Thomas and I go and meet him.

When I saw him, I knew everything was going to be alright, he would protect us.
