KIARA COULD SEE THE PAIN ETCHED ON LIA'S FACE. SHE WAS TRYING TO HOLD BACK TEARS, BUT THEY WERE STREAMING DOWN HER CHEEKS. Lia buried her head into Kie's chest as she cried, her sobs becoming muffled.
"Rafe?" Kiara repeated in disbelief, gently pulling Aelia up from her chest, after giving the girl a tight squeeze. Aelia nodded, her eyes downcast. "Yeah, Rafe," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Lia scoffed as she rolled her eyes, as if the whole situation was ridiculous. Kiara's expression was unreadable, it was like jealousy, anger and confusion mixed all together. "When did you date Rafe?" she asked, her voice tight.
Aelia used her hoodie sleeve to wipe her eyes, her face twisted in pain. "A while ago," she confessed with her voice slightly shaking.
Kie sat silent for a couple of seconds before shifting her body around so she was facing Lia completely. The Brooks girl had her head in her two hands with her elbows on her crossed legs. Kiara could see that Lia was trying to hold back her tears, and she felt a pang of sympathy for her.
"I'm sorry, Lia," Kiara said softly, reaching out to touch her best friend's arm. The two girls sat in silence for a few moments, the only sound being the only sound being the crickets chirping. Aelia leaned her head on Kiara's shoulder, and Kie wrapped an arm around her.
