A Poem To You

You lay in a vast field,
With birds flying around.
I stand afar, you reach for the unreachable.
You look my way as I reminisce.

You asked for my presence
When you felt you needed me the most.
I stayed and protected you from turmoil.
I remained, and pushed you behind me;
You, who are weak,
You, who are a mere child.

Yet as time passed,
You asked
If you could be let out again.
Why? Only to be hurt and come to me?
You trembled;
You did not want to be forgotten
By staying in my shadow.
But you had to see,
It was the only way you could be
Protected by me.

I would not let you interact
With the world that hurt you so bad,
I would take your place for you
As I knew that it was for the best.

I put you far,
Where you could not return from.
You cried
And said you did not want me anymore.
I knew you did not mean that
For you asked for me to be there first.
I would fulfill your needs til the day you die.

Growth did not come to you.
Like a plant with no sunlight or water,
You looked as if you could not grow
Yet you did not wither.

How could you?
For sunlight could not always be
Blocked by my shadow
Nor could I stop the rain
From inevitably touching you.
And in these moments you would gain
The will to run past me and try to escape.
But I would not let that happen;
I would hold you and bring you back to safety.
You should not reach out,
For there is nothing for you to reach.

Years have passed.
Your fears have come true,
You have been forgotten, only I remain.
I have lived as you, grown in your place.
You remain a child.

You lay in a vast field of roses and thorns,
With birds flying around.
I stand afar, you try to reach for me.
I look away as your eyes desperately scream for me.
