Do you ever see sunrises
and think of when we stayed up all night
and watched them through my window?
Once it was my favourite memory
and you told me months later
that sunrises reminded you of me.
Do you ever see blackbirds
and think of how we painted them
how we brushed charcoal on their wings?
Do you ever see the ocean
and recall when we ran along the shore writing messages in the sand?
Do you ever think of daffodils and see me giving them to you again?
Do you wrap Christmas presents and think of how we gave each other gifts with red ribbon?
Do you ever see a pair of friends and think of when that was us?
Maybe you see cassette tapes and think fondly when I bought them for you
and maybe white sneakers remind you of the pair I borrowed from you so often.
Maybe you watch the films we viewed together
and listen to the songs we danced to in your living room
maybe you look through kaleidoscopes
and think of how we stared through them as children
maybe you recall the wonder in our eyes.
I wish you weren't gone
wish you were still here for us
to look at the stars
and smudge flour to my nose while we make bread
and I wish I could ask you
if you ever see sunrises
and remember me.
