"Double Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration, Double Potions, and History of Magic!" (Y/n) groaned. "How could today possibly get worse?" Her eyes flickered around the Great Hall as she, Chija, and Marietta made to leave, and it got worse: she could tell several groups of friends had a rift between them over something (Y/n) had yet to determine.
Chija and (Y/n) shared all N.E.W.T. classes and (Y/n) shared Ancient Runes and Arithmancy with Marietta (though Marietta did not know that)."At least we've got McGonagall," Chija said half-heartedly.
"You're right," (Y/n) agreed. "But of course we only have her for the morning," she added miserably, heaving a sigh.
"Hello, Harry!" Chija said suddenly. With a wave, (Y/n) continued towards Defense Against the Dark Arts with Marietta.
"Hi," said Harry.
"You got that stuff off, then?"
"Yeah," said Harry, trying to grin as though the memory of their last meeting was funny as opposed to mortifying. "So did you... er... have a good summer?"
"It was just fine," Chija smiled.
"Is that a Tornados badge?" Ron demanded suddenly, pointing at the front of Chija's robes, to which a sky-blue badge emblazoned with a double gold T was pinned. "You don't support them, do you?"
"Yeah, I do," said Chija.
"Have you always supported them, or just since they started winning the league?" said Ron in what Harry considered an unnecessarily accusatory tone of voice.
"I've supported them since I was six," said Chija coolly. "Anyway... see you, Harry..."
She walked away, striding quickly in order to catch up with Marietta and (Y/n)."What was that?" Marietta cried. "Since when did you have any interest in Harry?"
"Well, he asked me out to the Yule Ball last year after (Y/n) had turned him down..." Chija said nervously. "I just thought it'd be nice to put some effort into being his friend..."
"Why haven't I heard of Harry asking you out?"
"Yeah, why are we just hearing about this?" Marietta added.
"Well, it didn't feel necessary to bring up the fact that I rejected him because I was going with Cedric!" Chija said heatedly. (Y/n) shook her head, an amused smile playing on her lips.
When they entered the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom they found Professor Umbridge already seated at the teacher's desk, wearing the fluffy pink cardigan of the night before and the black velvet bow on top of her head. The outfit reminded (Y/n) forcibly of a large fly perched unwisely on top of an even larger toad. She giggled to herself over the imagery.
The class quieted down as it entered the room; Professor Umbridge was, as yet, an unknown quantity and nobody knew how strict she could be."Well, good morning!" Professor Umbridge said when the whole class had finally sat down.
A few people mumbled "Good morning," in reply, for the majority were still trying to wake their brains up.
"Tut, tut," said Professor Umbridge. "That won't do, now, will it? I should like you, please, to reply 'Good morning, Professor Umbridge.' One more time, please. Good morning, class!"
"Good morning, Professor Umbridge!" they chanted back at her.
"There, now," said Professor Umbridge sweetly. "That wasn't too difficult, was it? Wands away and quills out, please."
Many of the class exchanged gloomy looks at the order 'wands away,' for that request had yet to be followed by a lesson they had found interesting. Professor Umbridge opened her handbag, extracted her own wand, which was an unusually short one, and tapped the blackboard sharply with it; words appeared on the board at once:
