The silence filled the room, all the spectators holding their breaths. She didn't look at any of them. Instead she stared ahead of her, pushing, feeling for the shocker.
She found it. A faint trace, but enough.
"Answer me. Did you commit this crime?"
Silence.
Deep breath.
Eyes forward.
Focus.
"No."
That one word turned the entire courtroom around her into chaos. The judge looked astounded, almost everyone had kept to their feet. But the blood pounding in her ears seemed to block out all the noise.
It had worked.
She lied.
