golden

Harry

I watched as her eyes lit up, throwing her head back as she laughed. When she laughed, she laughed with her whole body.

Her hair was half wet from the sea, beginning to dry to blonde salty waves. It shone beneath the sun, golden. Her skin was beginning to fade to a perfect bronze after laying in the Italian sun this week.

A long butterfly necklace dangled from her neck, a new gift from Kendall. She also wore a blue and white bikini paired with an oversized button up shirt.

She was the picture of summer

Sydney sat at the bow of the boat we were on sailing around the coast for the day. Kendall, Bella, Gigi and her sat laughing and gossiping, as I admired.

The rest of us sat at the other end of the boat, Jaden sleeping in the shade and Mitch and Sarah playing cards next to me.

I had my guitar and had begun strumming a rough melody, but got distracted by Sydney's infectious laugh a few metres away.

Seeing her full of life and happiness the past few days had been the most incredible thing. Sydney had a power that allowed her to light up a room and throughout the week she had shone.

I was in awe of how happy she made everyone else. She really was an angel.

"God you're so in love." A quiet voice said to my right.

My head whipped around as I saw Sarah perched over my shoulder, watching me watch Sydney. Her face was neutral, but had a knowing look to it.

"No point denying it, Mitch told me already." She added before I could even reply to her previous statement.

I let out a long breath, looking back to Syd who was now laying on her stomach reading The White Album by Joan Didion.

"Yep, I'm completely in love with her." I said without even thinking.

I suddenly felt Sarah's arms wrapped around my shoulders, hugging me tightly.

"I'm so happy for you H. I always knew one day you'd meet and this would all happen." She admitted.

"Oh really? You know you could've just introduced us and this all could've happened a lot sooner." I explained, as Sarah unwrapped her arms and gently strummed on my guitar.

"Everything happens for a reason and at the right time. I knew when you were ready, you'd find each other." I listened to the melody she played as she spoke, taking a likening to it.

"Play. I like listening to it." She smiled. I repeated the melody quietly as she continued.

"I've never seen either of you as happy as you are when you're together. Whatever happens, you'll always have that Harry."

Hearing this from Sarah gave me such a reassuring feeling. She had known Syd longer than I had and the thought I had made her happy, made everything worth it.

She lay down next to me as I continued to begin this possible song. I figured out a tune along with Sarah's melody and started humming, "Da Da Na Na Na...Da Da Na Na Na."

I repeated this quietly, beginning to see a song form in my mind. Sarah quietly tapped her foot as she listened, the drummer in her not being able to resist.

With the tapping of her foot and the melody, everything started to come together.

"Golden...golden...golden...golden." I quietly sang over and over again, looking back at Sydney shining in the sun.

"Golden, golden, golden...as I open my eyes...golden, golden, golden...right in front of my eyes." I started to think of some lyrics, letting it all flow together.

"Holding focus, hoping, take me into the light."

Sarah slid my battered notebook and pen towards me, and indication she thought the song could be something worth writing down. I wrote in the book constantly, poems, lyrics, thoughts.

I always wanted to save everything that flashed through my mind.

I started scribbling the guitar chords so I would remember. It wasn't too difficult, which enabled me to focus on the lyrics.

"Golden, golden, golden...as I open my eyes. Holding focus, hoping, take me back to the light. I know you were way too bright for me." I continued.

"I'm hoping someday we'll make our way to the sky...ba ba da da da, brown your skin just right."

As I wrote, I began scribbling and changing things and drawing music notes next to them to signal the change.

I kept at this for a while, enjoying the serenity of writing whilst sailing off in the middle of the ocean.

It also was able to keep my head clear and distracted from tonight. Something I had been planning for months, finally coming into fruition. I was terrified and stressed but had to play it calm.

As I was beginning to get in my head, arms were suddenly wrapped around my waist.

"Watcha writing there?" I heard Sydney ask from behind me, peaking over my shoulder at the messy notebook.

"Nothing." I quickly shut it, before turning around to her.

I'd written an array of songs for Sydney, but I felt sometimes embarrassed to show her, to blatantly say how in love with her I was.

"You better show me later. I heard a few notes from down there, it sounds beautiful." She smiled, kissing my lips gently.

I could see her face beginning to become covered in freckles, and her cheeks turning pink from the sun. I could also smell the layer of salt mixed with sunscreen that covered her body. She was intoxicating.

"Later."

"Speaking of," She started, "Will you please tell me what we're doing later, I'm dying here. All the surprises are making my brain ache."

"One last surprise then I'm done for a year." I laughed through my nerves of the night ahead.

"Okay fine. Will you come in the water with the birthday girl?" She asked, standing in front of me grinning.

I smiled and nodded at her, watching her jog back down to the girls. As she got further away, I realised how deeply I was in this.

How deeply I was in love with Sydney Lewis and how much I needed to tell her.
