Something had alerted the canine
just as something yet unexplained
had alerted the human mind earlier.
The sixth sense had been triggered.
That something was inexplicable.
The distinction from the canine
was the ability of the human mind
to retain those circumstances before.
In a way, the human was anchored -
disturbingly so—to events long done.
Regardless, the human was jarred,
like a carefree dog in restful sleep
moments before bolting awake.
The sudden expulsion
from sleep came
before the sirens,
before the whistle,
and even before the alarm.
The mind had become fully alert.
The mind awoke
from lost dreams.
The body sat up
from the soft bed.
Finding nothing of concern,
both mind and body
relaxed back upon the bed.
Only the cat had taken notice,
but even that was temporary.
