Imagine you are walking in the woods one day, and realize by the end of the journey, your favorite ring or bracelet fell off and now it's lost.
Why not elect a furry little creature with an affinity for shiny things to scout out the missing jewelry?
Introducing...
A Niffler is a creature native to Britain. Known for their black fluffy fur, pointed snout, and long nails–perfect for digging and burrowing deep underground. Which is a very similar living style to the American mole.
Besides this, they have a very special ability that serves their treasure-hungry addiction, they are born with magical pouches on their belly that are similar to the effects of an Undetectable Extension Charm (Much like Hermione's purse).
Female Nifflers will den deep into the ground, and go as far as twenty feet. This is where Nifflers usually hide their horde and wealth, but also where home starts for a litter, which could be between six to eight young Nifflers at once.
While Nifflers start colorful, a mix of solid colors or black/brown with white. Once they start to approach adulthood, they will adopt the signature black fur.
No matter how cute and affectionate these creatures might appear, adopting one might be out of the question. Especially when they start to cause mischief and seek out anything and everything shiny within the confines of their new home. Making their M.O.M Classification of XXX seems reasonable, as it stands for competent wizard should cope. Remember, this is no Chinese fireball (M.O.M Classification XXXXX). But a wizard must be quick on their feet and attentive to make sure the Niffler isn't causing any trouble.
Nifflers are historically known for their companionship with Goblins, who used their special abilities to seek buried treasure during their travels. In addition to this, Goblins had kept their long union with the Niffler population by continuing their employment in the record of working at Gringotts. These specially trained Nifflers are paired with Curse-Breakers, ultimately continuing the search for buried treasure, but in more prominently dangerous sites where curses might stop the average treasure-hunter.
But that's where the best type of treasure can be found!
MOVIE
As we all know, Newt has a Niffler named Teddy that not only caused havoc in an American bank but also a jewelry store before being caught once again (Though this time with plenty of finds!). When we see the creature again, in the next film, they are a bit hesitant into going with Newt and traveling via suitcase once more.
Seems as though the 'little bugger' isn't up for another adventure, but they are certainly put to good use when Newt casts a charm to unlock the scene's past footsteps etched in gold on the floor. They must have had a bit of practice in investigating together because the unnamed Niffler had their sights high in looking for the shiny outlines to help Newt on his mission to find Tina in France.
It's safe to say that they've earned the title of hero by the end of the film for their work in capturing one of Grindlewalds prized possessions.
BOOK
During the Golden Trio's fourth year, where Hagrid was professor and taught Care of Magical Creature class, he set up a wonderful challenge, where he hid Leprechaun gold in the ground surrounding his hunt. Then pairing up each student with a Niffler to see which could collect the most, the perfect way to see these little creatures in action and working.
Even though Leprechaun is considered to be fools gold and will disappear in a few hours, it still attracts a Niffler's attention to find and collect. But before the contest started, Hagrid made it clear to make sure you take off any shiny valuables, in order for the Nifflers to keep their attention on the fool's gold.
It's duly noted that Hagrid hadn't expressively said that Nifflers couldn't be adopted as a pet, but the appeal is very selective, as history states their use as treasure hunters and not the typical household pet.
Nifflers are able to squeeze into the tightest of spaces, allowing their bodies to bend and twist into the thinnest gaps possible. By using this technique, a Niffler could, perhaps, get into a fully locked muggle security safe inside a bank...
If you could adopt a Niffler, what would you name them?
What creature would you like to see next?
