A Bowtruckle is a creature that most resembles a twig with unproportioned-sized limbs that could be mistaken for a part of a tree. Which acts as the perfect camouflage for such a small creature.

The average Bowtruckle can be described as a light green color, when they aren't hiding away from any predators, with a sprout of leaves growing out of the top. This creature has two small ballpoint eyes, a small crevice where a nose would go, and a rather petite mouth. Since their regular diet consists of mostly eating insects, they are not in the need of any sharp teeth–And if the need does occur, their long fingers can act as the perfect tool to capture and take apart any meal they plan to eat.

In addition to these long talons, it allows the Bowtruckle to grip the surface of any tree no matter how dense the bark might prove to be.

Bowtruckles are known to be rather peaceful and shy creatures unless being provoked or their given home and territory being occupied by an intruder. Their main objective in subduing said creature is to go for the most vulnerable spot–the eyes. Since Bowtruckles are difficult to spot, harming one's eyes will render them almost invisible.

These creatures are known to be sociable with their own kind, even offering a possibility of a network or social class among those in said territory. Funny enough, a group or family of Bowtruckles is called a branch.

Bowtruckles are known generally by wandmakers as a job hazard to their wanding-making routine. One of the most important tasks in creating a wand suitable for a wizard is collecting the correct type of wand core for each individual. Now, Bowtruckles can find and claim their home in any nook and cranny of a tree, but they primarily find suitable arrangements in trees that give off magical essences. As previously mentioned, they are known to go for an intruder's eyes, but a handy trick to note is that offering a snack such as woodlice will act as a distraction for a person to gather the necessary supplies from the tree.

MOVIE

The Bowtruckle is famously known as being one of the main companions to the one and only Newt Scamander. However, it isn't the first time Newt has come across them–During his years at Hogwarts, Newt had made friends with the Branch of Bowtruckles that resided on the Hogwarts ground by the Great Lake.

In the following year, Newt had taken to keeping a branch in his suitcase during his mission to New York. His closest companion is known as Pickett, and can be often seen throughout the film within Newt's chest pocket–whether he is peeking out to view the outer world, or he is sticking out his tongue in response to the mischief Newt is up to. The most notable act Picket has done in the first film is to pick the locks of Newt's handcuffs when both he and Tina Goldstein were sentenced to execution without trial. This allowed Newt to gain the upper hand over the MACUSA staff and escape. However, it is important to note that during dealing with Gnarlak for sensitive information involving another creature, the Goblin had taken interest in Pickett due to their background of being able to get through difficult locks. Pertaining that this is fairly well-known information.

BOOK

Not much is mentioned of Bowtruckles besides they were focused on studies in fifth-year Care of Magical Creatures, when Professor Grubbly-Plank was still teaching. But given their low ranking, most witches and wizards wouldn't come across said creatures.

Bowtruckles can take the form of every color of tree bark to remain undetected. Whether it be Burch or Oak, a Bowtruckle can morph the color of its skin to trick any predator in the vicinity.
