The green line on the heart monitor flattened, and as the continuous sound of the the patient's life floating to purgatory tore through the tense atmosphere, a tear rolled off his cheek.
His face held no expression, and his eyes no emotion, but all those around him could tell he really had cared. For once, he had.
"I'm so, so sorry." That was all the doctor needed to say. "Are there any fam-"
Manjiro Sano stood up and swiftly made his way out of the crowded waiting room, letting the salt stain his cheeks as he let his tears flow freely. He wanted out of the emergency rooms, the hospital, in general. But he couldn't just leave her there, laying down on that uncomfortable, white, ...death bed. So he made his way to the rooftop.
God, she would've hated it. She would've hated it so much, in fact, he was ready to bet his life the moment she found out she died in a hospital, she would've come back to life just to die in some other place. In some other way, maybe.
By now he was already lying down on the cold pavement of the rooftop, looking at the moon with tears in his eyes and sore muscles.
He felt different in a terrible, terrible way. Like he was at home but not really at home. He could still see all of the buildings that he'd lived with the sight of for the entirety of his life, the familiarity of the figures marking their territory, taking a space up in the sky. He could still see the shiny diamonds that hung from the sky, and how the moon illuminated some parts of the city differently than it did others.
