Hyunjin got used to his powers and slowly adapted to the lifestyle of a half-ghost.However, his twin was obsessed to find out about his powers and where did they come from.
So Yeji started spending her whole time in the library, searching through pages of paranormal activities journals and stories.
-Brother?
-Hey, little one! Hyunjin took Niki in his arms. What's wrong?
-Sister doesn't want to play...again. She is busy.
Hyunjin sighed, his smile disappearing.
-Come with me! he said taking Niki by the hand.
They went to the library and found their sister buried in piles of books. Hyunjin knocked on the door and Yeji's head popped out from under the files.
-Can we talk?
-Sure. I am listening, she said focusing on one book with a red cover.
-Yeji! Take a break!
She looked at her twin, feeling the atmosphere getting heavier.
-You need to stop, ok? It doesn't matter where I get these powers from.
-It does! It has to be an explanation!
Hyunjin approached his sister and grabbed her by the wrists.
-Yeji, you need to stop! Niki misses you. We all do...
-But I want to know what made you so sad...she said crying. I want to know what did you do to deserve this life.
Hyunjin hugged her, caressing her long hair.
-It's no one's fault, ok? I can live with this. Come and stay with us, ok?
When the dusk came, Hyunjin heard a loud sound from downstairs. He rushed to the staircase and realized the sound was coming from the library.
-Yeji!
When he slammed the door open, he saw his sister on the ground with blood on her forehead, candles everywhere and a shadow in the middle of the room.
-Yeji, what did you do?
The shadow turned around and let out a burst of loud laughter.
-My son, there you are...
-Your what? Hyunjin asked frozen because of the fear.
-You are my son. The son of Poltergeist. And thanks to your little friend here, I am finally free.
Hyunjin looked at his sister who was apologizing with her eyes.
-What do you want?
-I want you to rule with me. Kill the people inside the house and take over it.
-Kill? This is my family!
-I am your family! I will be reasonable. I can make you human or I can give you full power over the house. Choose a side and I will gladly help you fulfill your needs. You have one day.
With that said, the ghost vanished into thin air. Hyunjin ran to his sister and kissed her forehead to soothe her.
-It's true. He is your father, she said through the sobs. I'm sorry! I just wanted answers. I am sorry! I found out about him in a book and... And invoked him.
All night Hyunjin thought about it. He was already grown up. A man.
Joining Poltergeist was of course off the table, but the idea of giving up on his powers was unpleasant.
He couldn't change his lifestyle after those years.
He was hesitating and buying time every time Yeji was asking him about his decision.
-Hyunjin? It's almost dusk. Are you ready to give him an answer?
-I don't know...
-What do you mean?-Look, if I give up on this, I don't know how I will do.
-You will live a normal life and go outside and make friends.
-But I'm scared. I don't like people and I've lived all my life between these walls.
-Yeah, but we can try together. As a family. You won't go alone.
-If I go outside, I will be a freak. I won't be able to adapt and communicate.
-So you prefer to stay here?
Hyunjin shrugged which made Yeji furious.
-Hyunjin, we all lived here in isolation because of you. Niki has no friends because he was too busy scaring people away from this house. This is our only chance to have a proper life and you are thinking of only yourself. All we did was for you. You are greedy, wanting both family and powers. Do whatever you want, but don't expect me to remain in this house any longer!
In the end, Hyunjin didn't make a choice.
And that cost him.
Poltergeist made the choice for him and killed his parents. His brother and sister were never found until 50 years had passed.
"I'm sorry I couldn't protect you! It's all my fault! I'm sorry! I'm really sorry! I want you all back. I was wrong. I should be the one covered in blood. I am sorry! Please don't get me! Please don't hate me! Please!" He cried on his knees, holding at his chest a picture with all five of them.
Hyunjin lived with the guilt for a century until his father gave him an ultimatum.
He was about to lose his memory and haunt forever the house.
Thanks to Yeji, he found the cure.
However, he didn't have time to make it work. And he didn't want anyone else to reach it. So he needed a guardian to keep people away from the cure.
And he did.
A mermaid.
He went to the shore and saw two syrens swimming close to him.
His whole word stopped the moment he saw the blue-haired one. He couldn't help but admire that beauty.
So he took him and made him the guardian of the house against his will.
He didn't have time to explain himself and lost his memory right in front of Jeongin's eyes.
Doomed to haunt through his family's death place...
