"We have to break up...we've needed to break up for a while now."
"What?! Why? Why all of a sudden?!" His anger flared inside of him. "I've been a good boyfriend!"
She put a hand on his chest. "Yes, you've been good to me. But it's just not right. A tiger and a fox? Besides you're much too young for me, I should've said something sooner."
"Too young." he huffed. "That's not what you say in bed. And who cares? We're both adults!"
"You don't understand!" She snapped as she took her hand back.
"Then make me!" He growled.
She flinched. She had never done that before. But it felt like he could've done something against her. He might just be nineteen but he was still leagues stronger than her.
"Lisa I won't understand anything if you don't tell me. Look I know I'm not the smartest man, but I'm also not as dumb as I look."
"We can't keep going on like this. You're too young for me and I'll be moving soon..." She looked away.
His fury was only a simmer now. "What do you mean?" He sat on the edge of the bed next to her, his hand going to her lower back.
"They're after me..." She whispered.
"Who is? I'll kick their asses."
She shook her head. "You can't." A deep breath. "The police are looking for me."
"Why? Are you a missing person or something?" His tone changed.
"Sorta..." She hedged.
"You gotta tell me or else I can't help."
"Before I tell you anything take all the phones out of this room."
"Okay...wh?"
"Don't ask just do it, please. Mine's on the dresser."
He got up and grabbed her phone on the way out of the room and came back.
"So why no phones?"
"I don't want them accidentally recording our conversation."
"You're being paranoid now."
"I can't be too paranoid actually." She ran her fingers over the red bandages on her leg.
He lifted an eyebrow at her. "Yeah...?"
"Anything I tell you does not leave here." She eyed him carefully, judging whether or not she could trust him.
"I'm a wanted woman. I'm on the run." She took a shuddery breath.
"What do you mean by that?" He had a terrible thought pop into his head. "You didn't..." he dropped his voice low. "Eat someone?"
"NO!" She shouted at him.
"That's right, you're vegetarian."
"No. But I was accused of it."
"No way. Someone accused you of eating someone else?"
"Someone murdered my fiancé and pinned it on me. And I've been hiding out for about three years now. I was doing good and then I met you."
"So now you're blaming me for your problems?!"
She shook her head. "No. It's just that you complicate things. I can't just get up and go, fuck..I also have to find another job in a new city." She held onto her head. It was all too much too soon. She began to whimper.
Travis didn't know what to do. He didn't want to lose her. She was the best thing to happen to him in a while. He liked her a lot. He scooted closer to her and wrapped her in his arms. "You...um you don't have to go."
"I should or else they could catch up to me."
"Do you look the same as you used to?"
She shook her head. "I dye my fur, they're looking for a red fox with a different name."
"Then what are you worried about? You aren't that same person anymore."
"Yeah. And how many vegetarian foxes are there? That's a dead giveaway."
"No, it's not. At school, no one is allowed to have meat at all. And many go on staying vegetarians afterward."
"So..?"
"Meaning a lot of this city is vegetarian, you're not alone."
"I still gotta figure out what to do."
"But not right now." He nuzzled into her neck with his nose and inhaled her scent. She was scared. It made his predatory senses peak again. He licked her neck and began to groom her head.
She leaned into him, the feeling calming her down.
"Lisa...don't think about anything. Okay?"
"Okay..." She closed her eyes and let him lead her away from this place.
