"Hey Stevie," Sharon called out from the seat across from Stevie. "Did Lori ever tell you about the time I keyed Joe's car?" Stevie's eyes went wide immediately.
"Sharon, that was YOU?!" She exclaimed, mouth agape. "I always thought that was my brother!"
"It was me." Sharon beamed, proudly. "It was right after Joe started getting weird when you were pregnant with Wrenna. Lori and I were laying backing vocals for Tom, and we saw Joe's Maserati in the parking lot. I knew it was his, because I recognized the license plate. I couldn't help myself, I just ran my key all the way along the side of the car." Sharon recounted.
The night before, Lori had come in and told her what had happened with Joe. Like Lori, Sharon had had a front row seat to the drama and heartache that was Joe leaving Stevie after impregnating her back in the 80s. And also like Lori, she had watched Wrenna go from a pudgy toddler with blonde curls, to a skinny little kid who loved horses and ballet, to a grown woman with a career and a family. Sharon had never really liked kids, but Wrenna was special. She was sweet and fun to be around, and Sharon had loved spoiling her throughout the years. And so, it was only natural that she would go along to New York with Stevie and Lori, if only to provide moral support for Stevie, or Wrenna, or both. After finally confessing the secret about keying the car, she sat proudly, waiting for Stevie's reaction.
"Chris was with us, so everyone assumed it was him, because everyone knew how much he hated Joe at that point." Lori added. "But it was actually Little Miss Perfect over here."
"Now you know my dirty little secret." Sharon said, giving an evil grin.
"Oh my God! Sharon, this is incredible!" Stevie said, still stunned.
"You should have seen the looks on Chris and Lori's faces when I did it." Sharon laughed. All these years later, the memory still brought her joy.
"We were shocked!" Lori retorted. "I have never seen Sharon do anything like that in all my life!"
"What can I say?" Sharon shrugged. All three of them laughed, as Lori recalled the way Sharon dragged her keys through the paint job, cussing as she went.
"I found out from Tom. He said Joe was so mad, and they couldn't figure out who did it. I knew you all were there, but I never let on to them about it. I always assumed Chris did it. He never denied it."
"Because he was covering for her!" Lori pointed at Sharon.
"I can't believe it." Stevie exclaimed, shaking her head. "That fucking Maserati. He loved it so much he wrote it into a song."
"Well, that's why I keyed it." Sharon recollected. "You know, I've always been a big fan of Wrenna. I still am. So whatever happens today, I've got her back – and yours."
"Yeah, absolutely." Lori nodded.
"I know that." Stevie smiled. "You two always have been in my corner, and Wrenna's too.
