JoIt's been about 10 years since the "Aye Corona!" epidemic surfaced. At the time my sisters and I were the weird homeschooled kids. Mom said we could choose to go to public high school when and if the time came. She said "if" because at the time most schools were closed and or were doing school remotely (Can you say homeschool?)
Now that I'm an adult (Almost 20 is grown up right?) I see things differently. the devastation the pandemic has caused. It flatlined economies and left far too many families resembling swiss cheese. I think people grumbled way more about missing concerts, proms and football games. than they did about their dying loved ones.
In rallies everywhere people complained, "The Boomers and Millennials lived their lives-- now it's the younger generations' turn to rule!" Millions and millions of people died but after a while people simply got used to it. Everyone was sick of the inconvenience and longed to get back to "normal" life. Once the virus mutated through the entire Greek alphabet things began settling down.
However, on the tenth anniversary a new and improved Covid strain surfaced. This one is simply called: Hyper Virus. So far it's killed the president, most of the House and Senate and nearly all of the Supreme Court Justices. Instead of freaking out, Americans breathed a collective sigh of relief. Finally a new, younger, more radical government could emerge. Comrades hoped The Powers That Be would finally meet their every need. A living wage? Sure! Free healthcare? No problem! Free college? You got it! With a wink and a nod the radical new government answered "yes" to all. However, once younger and younger citizens began dying the New Regime used the fear of the masses to gain absolute power and their promises fell to the wayside.
Not everyone blindly follows Uncle Samatha. Scattered throughout America there are exceptions. Take us, the March family from Lindenhurst, Long Island, for instance. If you're imagining my parents, Reggie and Mary March, to be the perfect couple with four perfect daughters, you'd be dead wrong. We have our issues just like any other red blooded American family. We have our secrets too.
Us March sisters were aptly named after the characters in Little Women. (I know... how embarrassing) Our mother, being obsessed with the story, had similar hopes and dreams for her four daughters. Her hopes were exceeded when each of us exhibited otherworldly powers at a young age. Our mother did her best to quench our superpowers but as we grew so did our gifts.
As our mother lay dying from the New Hyper Virus she wondered, "Will my warnings and encouragement reach my daughters from beyond the grave? Will they rise to the occasion to be brave Little Women?" She worried, "What will happen without me there to keep their superpowers in check?"
How do I know she thought these things? Mom was an avid journal writer. And after reading a couple of them I'm pretty sure my mom could predict the future.
Author's Note:
4 Sisters of the Apocalypse didn't start off as fanfiction. I hate fanfiction. It's not really fanfiction. However the daughters from Little Women are so annoyingly captivating. Putting them in a near future apocalyptic setting is delightful! Why not kill off the mother on the first page? We all know the story is about the sisters anyway. I've plopped Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy in the middle of Long Island New York in 2033. Aye Corona has been revved up and turned into a bioweapon. Here's the twist: The Powers That Be are spraying it on its own citizens in order to thin the herd and control the masses. Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy discover unique superpowers long suppressed by their dead mother. Will these sisters stop obsessing about boys, fashion and who's right long enough enough to save the day? I doubt it. Do you?
