HARRY GREENE LOOKED AND SMELT LIKE A LIVING GREASEBALL. He had his spiked orange-blossom hair that tickled everyone who saw it, the horrific quality of it, dripping with unwashed horror and matching his dead grey eyes, downturned and unblinking, a lion stalking its prey. He strutted over to the four boys, their breath hitched and eyes rolling, as if he owned the school. Anyone would tell that the boy was an absolute idiot, as he pranced about with his irritatingly ugly smile, fixed and primed with yellowing teeth, Adidas coat, a deep soot black and covered in mud splatters, sizing people up, because of course he wore a crown of social hierarchy upon his head, the overbearing leader of the popular kids, as there always is.Keenly aware of this tiered social hierarchy, Corey sussed straight away who was what. Who was in the running to date the prettiest girl at Higgs, who was the stupidest prick there ever was yet ran the school anyway (very obviously Harry), and who was the laughing stock, the scum and the bottom of the school. Corey suddenly realised and brackets acutely aware that he was the laughing stock, as always. If theres an all boys school, whichever ones are gay are always last, aren't they? He peered at Aled, and then at Tao, and finally at Nick, where they settled and were reluctant to the possibility of leaving his face. They weren't horrible- they were lovely, welcoming people in fact- but because one of their friends were gay, instantly meant they were cast away like the dregs in a bottle.
"If you don't talk to him, he will go away. If you don't talk to him, he will go away," Aled chanted quietly, psyching himself up for the possibility of having to maintain an interaction with the school imbecile.
"Aled, you know that didn't work last time. Or the time before that," Tao chastised, a notable hint of sympathy drawling from his voice.
"It might work now though, Tiny Tao."
"I hope you die, Aled, I hope you fucking die you-" Tao stops, interrupted by a shove from Nick and a grape, more like a bullet, wizzing past, narrowly missing his head.
"Alright, Nicky? Whose this then? Your boyfriends?" an irritating voice calls out, the urge to shoot something very obnoxiously concerning in Corey's mind.
"Just piss off, Harry," Nick sighs, staring at the table in shame.
"Nah, mate. I wanna talk to ya new friend, Rory."
"Corey. My name is Corey," he sniped back, gum chewed into a ball and dangerously close to being spat in someones face.
"Alright, Rory. You're the fag, right?" Harry clapped Corey on the back, arm swung around his neck like they were friends.
"Yes, I am. Is that offending you like your hair is offending me? Its a fucking crime."
"Chill out, mate. Look around, none of us are like, homophobic." He gestured to the group of six boys, all of which were stuttering and staring blankly at one another, keenly interested in the grassy underneath or the gates nearby where they were stood.
They were like a posse, a gaggle of boys with their fair share of North-face and Adidas coats and trainers, phones buzzing from unknown Snapchat adds. One of them, who Nick had pointed out to me as Sai, was getting his glasses thrown around by a few greasy haired kids, a playful banter swinging around them, an easy-going conversation swiftly passing between a couple, probably about football or the 'fittest' girl, Corey assumed. Another, a boy Corey was yet to know the name of, was staring out into the horizon, eyes scantly gazing at the clouds, before his phone dinged and he smiled abashedly into his phone and hastily replying and blushing, a text obviously from a loved one, or a crush. It was sweet to watch, but Corey quickly looked away as he felt the intimacy was too much for him to be watching, too close and personal. Corey searched the boys again, looking to see if any of them were even watching. But none of them were really paying attention, more like they were just brought there by their leader.
"You are though," Tao pointed out, earning a small laugh from Nick and a rare smile from Aled, who hadn't smiled since Harry had been here.
"Tao, how's your little girlfriend? He hasn't been here in a-"
Tao was seething and shouting, restrained by a very obviously outraged Nick. "She is fine, and she is not my girlfriend, you transphobic idiot."
"Yeah, whatever mate. Its not like I care about you right now anyway. Rory, I just wanna say, you better not, like, have a crush on me or something, right?" Harry laughed, taking the gum from his mouth and throwing it into Tao's beanie.
"In your dreams. You looked like a truck had sex with a frog. As if anyone would have a crush on you, you ugly, self centred fool. Oh and by the way," Corey laughed bitterly, "Have a taste of your own medicine," as he said that, the gum he was chewing landed directly into Harrys eye.
Thats when it kicked off, arms and legs and bodies flying everywhere. Boys were pummelling each other and throwing abandoned weaponry, things like gum and pencils, like it was a war zone. Several people were injured or running, it was carnage. There was going to be a fight, there was already so many fights, but Corey, trembling with unattainable rage, raised his fist towards Harry, ready to kill. Corey had always been a harmful boy, he has always accidentally hurt people, but when he wanted to he could be deadly. He could hit a killing blow, and nobody wanted that, especially Aled, who was used to never creating or talking about fights, because he was usually so quiet, so sure.
"Come on, Summers, before you get a black eye," Nick shouted, grabbing Corey's wrist loosely and snapping him back to reality. They ran, hand in hand, causing a blush from both parties, both unknowing of the others blush, down to the classrooms and up the stairs, into the warmth of a locker room.
"I'm going to the toilet. Tao, you coming?" Aled panted, clearly out of breath, face covered in congealed food mess. Corey blinked sympathetically, offering Aled a small smile, which was returned.
"Yeah, I'll help you get out of your fruit salad."
"Funny. You two coming?" Aled asked the remaining two boys, both sat on the bench and simultaneously shaking their heads, both unscathed from the incident. "All right, see you later."
As the two boys walked away, complaining loudly as they disappeared down the hall, Nick sighed and wiped his face from the sweat. Corey looked at his palm, remembering the hand that had lay in it, and blushed again, eyes darting towards Nick and darting away again. Shit shit shit. He could not like this boy already. Hell, Corey had only been there less than a day. For all he knew, he could be a sex offender, or really horrible. But, he wasn't going to fall for a straight boy. Not this time.
"Ugh, why are straight people like this?" Corey groaned, leaning back onto the lockers, making a metallic ping as his back touched them.
"Fuck if I know. Harry's always been like that. He's just a pretentious prick."
"Like Bin," Corey laughed, immediately correcting himself to a very confused Nick. "Ben. Thanks, by the way, for helping me earlier."
"What? Oh that was nothing. He's such a prick, I didn't want you talking to him."
"Thanks? He was just being like straight people normally are. Apart from you, of course."
Nick stared at me and smiled, somewhat shyly. He chuckled, and I looked at him. "What?"
"Who said anything about me being straight?"
