The second Reggie walked into his apartment and his cat wasn't waiting at the door to greet him he knew something was wrong.
"Ebony,"Reggie called, "Ebony, baby where are you?"
Usually, since she knew the time he got home and would hear his keys in the lock, she was rubbing against his legs before he even got the door shut.
Reggie set his bag down, slipping off his shoes, and moving around the small apartment.
"Ebony,"Reggie tried calling out again, before his gaze stopped on the far wall.
The window was open.
"No,"Reggie exclaimed, rushing over to look out onto the fire escape.
Ebony wasn't on the fire escape, and after he tore up his apartment and she still wasn't there, he collapsed onto the floor and began to cry.
He had Ebony since she was a kitten, and he was still living at his parents' house.
She had been with him through a lot, and for a while felt like his only friend and the only living thing that cared about him.
After sitting on the floor and crying for about an hour, Reggie pulled his phone out and called Alex.
"Hey, Reg, what's up,"Alex said.
"Ebony's gone,"Reggie said, "I must have left the window open a little bit and she was able to get out. She wasn't on the fire escape or anywhere in the apartment."
"Oh Reg,"Alec said, "She loves you she wouldn't just leave. Maybe if you leave the window open she'll be back. And tomorrow, Willie, and Julie, and Luke, and Flynn and I can help you look around the block okay?"
"I don't know what I would do without her,"Reggie said.
"We'll find her Reg,"Alex said, "I know we will."
They didn't find her.
They spent the entire first half of the day looking around Reggie's building and asking people if they had seen a friendly black cat around.
But it was lunch time and Luke and Flynn had work, Alex and Willie had meetings, and Julie was having dinner with her dad and brother and needed to get ready.
Reggie assured everyone he would be fine and would get some posters printed.
He walked into the apartment building feeling exhausted and sad, noticing the cork board meant for resident annoucements had something on it.
Found- Black Cat
Climbed into my window through the fire escape.
If yours, come to apartment 406.
Reggie couldn't race up the stairs fast enough, reaching the floor and finding the room number.
He banged on the apartment door, catching his breath when the door opened.
A man his age stood there, Ebony tucked under his arm.
"Ebony,"Reggie exclaimed before the cat chirped and Reggie took her into his arms.
"You scared me so much,"Reggie said, "Don't you dare run away again."
She just chirped again, before climbing onto Reggie's shoulder, reaquainting herself with her perch.
"Guess I don't have to have you prove you're the owner,"The man said, turning Reggie's gaze away from his cat.
"Thank you so much,"Reggie said, "I spent this morning looking all over for her and was going to print some posters to put up before I saw your flyer."
