It's quarter to three in the middle of the night, I am exhausted but restless. I've been tossing from left to right, unable to stop thinking. Five days passed since I met Célestine last time, and she's all I can think about tonight. We face time daily, but technology doesn't cut it anymore. I need the real life interaction, small touches, glances. The smell of her shampoo – strawberry and mint. The slide of her fingers up my arm.
I've never slept so well as when I fell asleep on her couch, and on her shoulder. My body let go of everything. Not a single thing was holding me close to Earth. I was out of it. Even though only for two hours, I woke up ready to run an double ultra marathon.
When I planted Usher's twin cool uncle Bruce's herbs, and she sat there with me, silent or not, it was so right, I hoped it would never end.
She talked about my dreams with an understanding I was never able to give myself. With a perspective completely opposite to mine. As she made it all achievable, made me not too small to reach high, she dragged me onto a different path, with a different view. Not as depressing.
I don't have to stay here, while my daydream is somewhere far away. I can reach that level, too. Or bring my daydream to me. Somehow, one day, maybe it could work out. Even though still out of reach, not impossible to meet.
At 3:44 a.m., I give up and text my staff's group chat.
Me: DAY OFF TODAY! Something urgent came up, so we're closed today. @ Johnny, handle the social media please, and also leave a note on the door before 9 a.m.
As soon as they all wake up, I'll earn at least 50 bonus points as a boss.
The urgent thing that came up cannot wait, so I send another text, to Célestine.
Me: if you have plans for today, cancel them
Me: I wanna take you somewhere
Me: five days of not seeing your face is TOO MUCH
She opens the messages before I exit our chat.
Célestine: I'm awake!! I couldn't sleep. where are we going?
Célestine: aren't you working?
Célestine: I'd cancel everything to spend time with you
Me: just announced a day off
Me: surprise! I have an idea, I think you'll like it
Célestine: surprise is even better
Célestine: can't wait!
Célestine: what time?
Me: I need a bit of sleep so let's meet at 11?
Célestine: alright, I'll be ready
Célestine: should I take something?
Me: extra clothes
Célestine: ??????
Célestine: where are we going
Me: it's a surprise!! I'm not telling you
Célestine: okay oh my God I'm excited
Célestine: I'll sleep too
I'm grinning at my phone. Like a teenager. I haven't experienced a bond like that as a teenager. I had classmates, some friends I'd meet up after classes with. I didn't have crushes. My relationships came out of nowhere, I never wanted to be with anyone. People just were in my life, they would come and go. I didn't pay much attention to who stayed.
