Daryl smiled as he looked back at Carl in the rearview. He smiled looking at his boy, he ran a hand through his hair as Rick sat in the driver's seat. "You've got the cupcakes right kiddo?" Rick asked, looking back at him.
"Yep dad." He smiled holding them up. Each was decorated with pastel frosting, some pink, a few yellow, some purple, and a few were green. Each had a small candy egg in the middle.
"Great, that's exactly what we need." Rick smiled as he started the car up. "Ready to see your cousin?"
Carl smiled big. "Yes!"
"Sophia will be excited to see you." Daryl smiled. "Her momma calls me all the time."
"Really! You think she will be excited!" Carl asked with a big smile.
"Yes, I'm sure she will be." Daryl replied as he looked to Rick with a happy smile. They hadn't been together long but Rick and Carl were his whole world. He loved them more than anything, when he first met Rick he had never expected to fall in love, nor did he expected to become a stepdad to a ten year old.
They pulled up Carol and Merle's home and Carl happily made his way up the stairs with his dads following behind him. The two men held hands as they knocked on the door, Sophia answered it with a squeal as she saw her cousin. She saw the box of cupcakes so she refrained from hugging him but was beyond excited to see him.
"Momma, daddy! Uncle Rick and Uncle Daryl are here!"
Merle came around the corner with a grin seeing his little brother. They hugged one another happy to see one another again after a while. "You're looking wonderful." Daryl smiled as he saw Carol set a casserole on the table.
"Thank you pookie." She grinned, bumping his hip a bit. He laughed at her, she was always so good to him. When they were young and she started seeing Merle she was the first to learn the truth about the extent of abuse their father was causing him. When she told Merle a lot of things went down, but she was always there for him. The two of them were thick as thieves which honestly worried their husbands at times. They were always planning something, and as usual had planned something for their little family party.
Rick and Merle sat back together while the kids ran around playing together while Daryl helped Carol finish setting up the putting out dinner.
"Come eat." Daryl called with a smile on his face. They sat together and all saw a carrot cake on the center of the table.
"I didn't know you made a cake." Merle said, salivating over the cake.
"I didn't," Carol admitted, "Daryl did."
Rick gave Daryl a look of confusion. "When did you make that?"
"Yesterday when I came over, you were at work and Carl was at baseball." Daryl smirked. "Made the cupcakes today." Daryl smirked.
"So my little brother is a baker." Merle smiled as they plated their dinners.
Daryl smirked as Carl was pushing the carrots Rick put on his plate as far from the rest of his meal as he could. "I bake. On occasion."
Merle chuckled, they sat together and talked about their coming plans for summer when the kids were out of school. Once their meal was done Daryl cut the cake and gave everyone a slice, he sat back hoping it actually tasted good. He had never made a carrot cake before but he wanted to surprise everyone but he knew that he could properly make the cupcakes they brought.
He watched his child and husband for their reaction.
Carl mumbled in happiness as he tasted the cake. "Wow dad this is awesome!" Carl exclaimed.
Daryl beamed, he was glad it worked. Merle gave Daryl an approving nod. Daryl beamed thankful his brother approved of his baking ability. "This is great honey." Rick smiled, giving him a small kiss. Daryl smiled glad he was actually able to bake properly. It was one of the many things his father didn't let him do when he was young.
Once everyone was finished with their meals Daryl and Carol brought out some eggs and colored dye. They gave each kid a white top. "Alright so you'll dye the eggs and no matter the mess you make you'll get a fun top too."
The kids sat together giggling and talking while they dyed their eggs, the colors stained their hands and their tops but they were happy.
"Now you have one more thing to do." Daryl smiled as he watched them color the eggs and splash one another with egg dye. He handed a single egg to each kid. "Go find your dads and smash them over their heads."
The kids looked at one another in excitement and got up racing off to find their dads who were sitting in the living room together talking over a beer.
"How are your eggs going?" Rick asked with a smile.
"Really good dad." Carl smiled, Sophia giggled as she nodded to her cousin. They both slammed the eggs over their fathers heads while Carol and Daryl watched with big smiles laughing hard.
The two men stood up as egg yolk ran down their heads, Carol and Daryl fist bumped as their husbands dripped in yolk. "We brought you extra clothes." Daryl smirked as Rick looked up at Daryl.
Rick glared knowing very well that the two had this planned a few days ago. Merle laughed harder at Rick because he had hair that the yolk soaked into while he didn't have to worry about that.
"You go shower first officer Friendly." Merle said with a chuckle. "We can get them back later." Merle promised. Rick mumbled and went to take a shower while the kids kept coloring their eggs. Once Rick was finished and Merle took his own shower they went to the kitchen together and grabbed the pink cupcakes and made their way up to their significant others. Carol and Daryl were busy chatting when two cupcakes were shoved in their faces.
Merle fell back laughing while Rick took off running as Daryl took off after him. Carol looked up at Merle and narrowed her eyes. "You're going to get it later." She grunted as she wiped the frosting off of her face. Merle stiffened knowing very well she would but he loved that woman no matter what.
Daryl tackled Rick to the ground while Sophia and Carl cheered. Rick laughed as Daryl kissed him which caused frosting to get all over his face. "You're a pain in my ass." Daryl whispered, smearing some more of the frosting over his husband's beard.
Rick smiled, kissing him once again as they both got up from the floor.
The kids began to grow tired after Merle sent them on an easter egg hunt where he hid most of them impossibly hard. He ended up finding most of their eggs for them because they'd given up. Daryl picked Carl up and carried him to the car after he fell asleep on the couch, Sophia was curled up with her blanket on the opposite side, the Easter party went extremely well, and they were happy their families got along so well.
