KIT DEMPSEY WOULD ALWAYS have debts to pay. He supposed, much to his chagrin, that owing people was a part of becoming a hero. When you cared, when you loved, no debt ever got paid, not completely. It was safe to say that Kit hated it. In his not-so-trustworthy opinion, treachery was far better than this. At the very least, he wasn't terrified each day that something would happen to him.
Or worse, to the idiots who decided he was worth giving a shit about.
Well, more like one idiot, and the idiots who gave a shit about him.
If it weren't for Leo, and maybe Piper and Jason at a stretch, Kit would've been Gaea's right hand man just days after they returned back to Camp Half-Blood. Over the next six months, a bit of his heart chipped away day-by-day, piece-by-piece, until he could feel his mind spiralling.
Just give in, Kit. You know what you are and a hero isn't it. This isn't going to make your father proud. You'll never make him proud, don't you see?
When Gaea wormed her way in, Kit turned to Leo for comfort. When Kit was having doubts, he turned to Leo for assurance. Building the Argo II together, Kit focusing on their defences and Leo on... well, everything else, Kit allowed himself to get close. Lines started to blur, and before he knew it, Kit was in too deep to turn back.
But as Kit Dempsey was about to discover, people were never permanent.
And Kit would only get so far if he was relying on someone else to remind him of who he was.
