"You're fired."

"What?" I gasp. I get the evidence, I show it to the Chief, and now I lose my job? I could almost feel steam pouring out my ears.

"There's nothing here, Wilden! Nothing. Did you read it? Read it to me, now!" The Chief says, all in one breath. He shoves the pieces of burned paper at me. Most of them are charred and I can't make out all the words, but I start on the first page and read.

"Dear Diary, it's been hard, it's always been...showing off her ug...I can't believe....I feel hurt, Diary, to be rejected twice...I've decided what to do now...can't wait any longer...It's g...today...peaceful...signing off...." I stop my reading and look up at the Chief.

"There is nothing here that proves CeCe Drake is the killer. And worse," he cuts in before I could protest, "You disobeyed me. I warned you of the consequences and I'm not giving you a second chance. I'm sorry, Darren, but you're fired."

I couldn't protest, couldn't even say anything. What was there to say? I've known stocky, balding Chief Gary long enough to know he wouldn't change his mind. Sighing, I stand up and head to the door.

"Darren." The Chief calls. I stop, one hand on the door handle but I don't turn around. "I'm sorry."

"Yeah." I muttered, "I'm sorry too." With that, I step out the office, for good.
