By the time Lawliet and Y/N had made it back into the city, the sunset had already begun blurring the once blue sky with tones of tangerine and fuchsia, the two colors swirled into one another and a handful of blinking stars twinkled and danced through the clear air.

Though she would be returning home later than anticipated she had hoped the poorly put-together excuse that work had run over or that the train had been delayed would be her saving grace from any punishment Hatori would make her undergo, though she reckoned it wasn't a reason he'd be thrilled over it was plausible enough so that the lost time couldn't be pinned on her.

Despite the balancing threat of an awaiting confrontation, her smile hadn't faltered and the weight hadn't returned since she washed it down in the spring lake of her hometown.

Perhaps it was foolish thinking that was bordering on hypercritical considering her vocal dislike towards the Detective...But for the first time in her life, she had the chance to act like any other teenager.

For that experience alone any consequence would be worth it.

As always the guards at the entrance greeted her robotically, their eyes following as she stepped through the lobby to no doubt check for the slightest suspicion to report to the Doctor.

Even the clue that her clothes appeared more crinkled would be something they'd snap to report like loyal dogs. In all her glory the receptionist had given the same reaction, her stare seemed much dirtier and her red-coated lips puckered out as if Y/N's presence had been a bothersome disruption, not that she had typed anything up on that computer in the last three hours.

Unable to feel satisfied just by her outlandish facial expressions the woman released several tuts which caused Y/N to pause on the staircase.

"Your one hour and three minutes late." She reprimanded. "Mind your manners when it comes to Mr. Hatori, after all, he was gracious enough to let you live with him." The last part had been mumbled under her breath.

Cocking her head to the side and leaning against the rail she mimicked the elder's expression. "Mind your business." Y/N sassed, sliding back down the staircase. "Office works shouldn't stick their noses where they don't belong or communicate with those they work for."

"I don't work for you! After all your only here under his supervision!" The woman retorted, snarky as ever her lips formed into a tight grimace. "If anything it would be bold of me to think I outrank you. Office worker? Is that an insult? Your nothing more than a glorified call girl he's taken an interest in."

Most of the time Y/n withstood the comments because she had grown used to them, the guards had even snickered at the word because they would remark the same things under their breath on the daily.

There was no point in arguing with an ignorant mind she thought, as much as we wished we could change another's false perception or bigoted outlook it would turn out to be a pointless affair.

Not because a person's brain couldn't mature or learn a different view but because the inhibitor themselves outwardly refused that difference and openness, the mind may have been ready to listen as it developed but humanity itself is too immature to care for any other views or realties if it doesn't fit there own set of self-taught morals.

Still, despite the fact she'd often consider herself a mature and level-headed person (despite dips of emotion here and there) Y/N was not as socially versed as those around her...And she just wanted to wipe the look off that woman's face with the same smugness she had presented in that last snippet.
