"have i ever told you how much i adore you?"
steve harrington's voice carries over the music thunderously spilling from his cars speakers,
his hand entwined with y/n's as the summer wind rushes in from the wide-open windows.
y/n's hair flails around her existence while they ride down the smooth, one lane road that leads to home.
"maybe,"
y/n answers with a soft grin.
"would you like me to tell you again?"
"would you?"
steve brings y/n's knuckles to his gentle lips and presses soft kisses there.
"i'll tell you until my lungs give out, y/n."
she can't decide if the warmth kissing her skin is from the dying sun above or from steve himself.
either way,
it's a beautiful feeling and y/n can't help but to bask in it.
when y/n's house comes into view,
steve is forced to stop just a few blocks away.
"come on,"
he sighs out.
"i can't even walk you to your door?"
"such a sweet boy,"
y/n teases as she leans over the console to plant a kiss against steve's chiseled cheekbone.
"not yet. i haven't found a way to tell dustin."
"dustin wouldn't care. you know that, right?"
she smooths over the chapstick stain ingrained into his skin in her wake while she gives a small shrug.
"he admires you a lot, you know?"
steve nods his head.
"he needs someone to look up to. a real standup man like you."
the two of them share small smiles at her choice of wording,
but ultimately settle into the truth.
"one day, but not now. i can't do that to him."
"you're so perfect. i almost hate it,"
steve teases as he leans into y/n,
letting his lips line with hers to create a short,
yet still so vehement,
kiss.
he pulls away to look down at this sacred lover of his with amorous eyes.
"almost,"
he echoes with the infamous harrington charm.
y/n bubbles over with laughter and playfully pushes him away,
though she betrays her effort by threading their hands together again.
the silence settles upon them for only a few seconds before their voices rise in unison,
"can you come over tonight?"
"can i come over tonight?"
their laughter fills up the empty space in the car until it settles for y/n to answer with,
"i'll wait up for you."
before she exits the car entirely to walk up the sidewalk and home,
steve brings her in for one last parting kiss.
and she melts into it,
as though it will be their last;
pretending like their coming together again won't be in just a few hours.
steve harrington can't help but to shower the heavenly woman in affection.
it's a wondrous feeling to offer it just as it is to receive it.
what might he know of love without y/n?
steve harrington hopes to never have to find out.
"i'll see you soon,"
y/n says with a wide smile,
having moved barely an inch away from steve.
he lets his thumb smooth over the reddened bottom lip of hers as he says,
"counting down the seconds."
after a while of interrupted goodbyes,
y/n finally breaks away from the trance that is
steve harrington and makes way to her home.
immediately upon entering,
dustin collides into her with a groan.
"watch where you're going."
y/n pushes his head to the side and spits back,
"you're in my way, dork."
the two mock each other's facial expressions until they slowly ebb away into laughter.
"where've you been?"
dustin asks once their playful argument comes to an end.
y/n shrugs then let's a white lie slip from her lips still numb from steve's influence,
"with robin. why?"
"i dunno. you smell...different."
she picks up the fabric of her shirt near her shoulder and inhales to see what it is dustin means.
she's met with a wave of steve's cologne;
it's ingrained into her,
bringing truth to her evening.
"must be something new robin's trying,"
she fibs while making way to the kitchen,
where dustin inevitably follows.
"uh-huh,"
he sings with narrowed eyes to his older sister.
y/n tries to think nothing of it;
brushing it off in hopes dustin's suspicions will lessen,
but she knows her brother.
he is anything but incurious.
the moment his nose turns up by the smell of something peculiar,
he won't stop until there's an answer.
though this is a wonderful trait to have,
she wishes he would use it elsewhere,
where it didn't infringe on her and her life.
"so, what'd you do today, dust-bunny?"
y/n asks in a moment of deflection while digging her knuckles into his scalp.
he pushes her hands away with a protest of annoyance but ultimately answers with,
"nothing. had to prepare for the campaign tonight. which reminds me..."
"no, dustin, i'm not driving you!"
dustin's pleading facade falls and is replaced with one more suited for him:
smug payback.
"come on, y/n! you owe me."
"owe you? for what?"
there's a grin on his lips when he says,
"because i know that it's been you leaving the window open at night because you're sneaking out."
y/n palms her face for her carelessness.
their mother had whined about it being a feral animal when the truth was it's been y/n's daring nightly thrills;
her excursions to see steve.
"fine. but i'm not picking you up."
dustin's face lights up with joy as he cheers,
"great!"
"you suck,"
y/n jokes as she slaps the back of his head in her passing by him.
just a few more hours,
she reminds herself,
and steve is all yours.
