June 2001: Part One

Chapter Summary

Jiyong is awesome, Jennie is a calamity.

June 21, 2001

Jennie had been moping on the couch since the school year ended. Hanbin had shown up at the door every day for the last three weeks asking if Jennie wanted to play with the other neighborhood kids. She didn't. Jiyong tried to convince her that going outside to play was something that normal kids do. Jennie told him she was fine being not normal. There were also some less than flattering comments that indicated that the neighborhood kids were less than savory. Jiyong tried not to think about it.

Every year, Jiyong and Dara adjusted their schedules during the summer months so that one of

them was always home with Jennie. Jiyong worked from home two days a week and Dara worked the evening and overnight shifts at the hospital. She always did her long 36 hour shift on the days Jiyong worked from home.

It was a typical sweltering Thursday in late June when Jiyong pushed his lump of a daughter off of the sofa. "Get up, Jennie."

"DAD!" Jennie exclaimed from the floor, where she was continuing to be a lump. "I need you to go shopping with me," Jiyong nudged at her with a toe.

"We just bought groceries," she sulked. "I'm not shopping for groceries."

"I don't need any clothes. It's too hot for clothes." "Jennie, we've talked about the no pants thing." "Pants are of the devil, Dad."
