The small and old bridge beneath you shakes and rattles as you carefully follow the foothold of Operative Unstable. You turn to look at the grim huts, frowning at the view of them all crowded together as if trying to huddle for warmth. You sweat at the sight and turn back to avoid the growing anxiety in your chest.
3 days earlier...
You were very late to pay rent, and at this point you barely had enough money to buy food. You received your (surprisingly) first eviction note, and had 14 days to pay off the rent. Great. It seems that your streak of fortune has run out because every place that was up for hire, no longer needed any workers. On another note, you have been encountering more and more with the operatives.
"Ugh, the next time I have to reach in my money box for scraps of cash I'll tear a hole into it." You whined as Benevolent took a sip of his tea, nodding. You were at the bakery, pulling at your hair in frustration, leaving it a mess. The red velvet slice of cake in front of you is yet to be consumed. The gentle sound of rain in the background.
"Didn't Radiant_Day give you the letter? That option is always available you know." He stated. You sighed, rubbing at your tired eyes "I know but it's just.. why would the Supreme Leader, want me? An average civilian working at such a high ranking job, it just doesn't add up and Im kinda doubtful of its sincerity." At that, Benevolent stilled for a bit and placed his cup on the table. Before you realize how inappropriate it is to talk about being distrustful of the Supreme Leader to one of the Operatives working under him, he replied.
"Maybe you're just overthinking it? Sometimes Great_Day would enlist civilians into the workforce or army to help with the war. Besides plenty of.. financially unstable" "Broke" "-FINANCIALLY unstable civilians take on lower ranked jobs in the Union to support their families."
You sighed, looking up at the Baker "Well aren't you an operative? Don't you know the reason why the all powerful Supreme Leader wants to take little O'l me into his wing?" Slicing the delicacy before you with a fork and taking a bite.
"Well unfortunately no.. even though we work in the same team were still very much left in the dark about Great_Days plans". He stared into his cup as the liquid stilled, rubbing his finger against the handle.
You observed him for a few more seconds before you relented.
"Well alright then, this was nice conversation, I think I'm gonna head home in a bit." You stood up, Benevolent following in the action as he pushed his chair in. "Let me walk you home it might be dangerous, and also pack up your cake." He headed over behind the kitchen counter to take out a white box to pack the cake with. As you walked outside you noticed the rain was much more heavier than before, and the wind has started to pick up.
You opened your umbrella as you waited for the baker to come out. A little jingle of the doors bell ornament alerted you of the man. You turned to see the operative pulling the roller down. As he bend over to lock the door you quickly set your eyes back straight forward onto the streets, a small red hue flushed on your cheeks. He walked over besides you, pocketing the keys before you two set off.
The umbrella you were holding was not so big. Both your shoulders brushing each other as you both tried to avoid being soaked from the pouring rain. Walking on a particularly wet pavement made you slip. You would have landed face first if it weren't for Benevolent_Day grabbing your arm. However, the balance threw the both of you off and you crashed onto the floor.
Your back ached from the impact as you started to get up, pushing yourself off your elbows. You would have got up were it not for the weight on your chest. Benevolent looked up rubbing his wounded nose before the two of you froze. You were in such close proximity. It felt like everything else stilled for a moment, the rain and your soaked clothes being an afterthought. But before anything else can happen, Benevolent pushed himself off of you and blushed. "Im so sorry, I didn't meant to land on you!" He held out a hand as he looked away, still rubbing his nose with the other hand. You grabbed it and pulled yourself up. "No no it was my fault for being so careless" You laughed sheepishly.
As you reached over to take your umbrella you noticed that the flustered operative was still holding on to your hand. "You could let go of my hand now Bene" you pointed out teasingly. "No, what if you fall again? If I hold your hand you won't fall again." That seemed more like an excuse, but you'll allow it. "Alright then, don't let me fall for you then." You returned to your path home, walking with your shoulders brushing. It seemed like a waste to hold the umbrella, you two were thoroughly soaked now and there was no place on your clothing the rain hasn't hit.
You've arrived on your doorstep, unlocking the door you looked back at the sight of the Operative being drenched in water. You took pity on him and opened the door to widen welcoming him in. He hesitated before you rolled your eyes and pulled him in.
Inside you took some clean towels to dry the two of you off. You went inside your bedroom locking the door behind. Roaming around in your drawer you took out some spare dry clothes for the both of you to change into. You worried the clothes may be a bit too small for the operative, but you tried to find the biggest pair you owned.
You changed into your pajamas holding the other spare pajamas, as you walked out the room. Closing the door behind you, "Hey Bene I have some spare clothes you can change to they may be bit small b-" You were stopped in your tracks to Benevolent squeezing the water out of his uniform shirt in the sink, but more importantly at the sight of his back exposed, facing you.
