The Big Talk and Apparation

A week and three days after Fred and George left Hogwarts, they were still the talk of the school. Even eyewitnesses had been half-convinced that they had seen the twins dive-bomb Umbridge on their brooms, pelting her with Dungbombs before zooming out of the doors. In the immediate aftermath of their departure, there was a great wave of talk about copying them.

Fred and George had made sure that nobody was likely to forget them very soon. For one thing, they had not left instructions on how to remove the swamp that now filled the corridor on the fifth floor of the east wing. Umbridge and Filch had been observed trying different means of removing it but without success. Eventually, the area was roped off, and Filch, gnashing his teeth furiously, was given the task of punting students across it to their classrooms.

Inspired by Fred and George's example, a great number of students were now vying for the newly vacant positions of Troublemakers-in-Chief. In spite of the new door, somebody managed to slip a hairy-snouted Niffler into Umbridge's office, which promptly tore the place apart in its search for shiny objects, leapt on Umbridge on her reentrance, and tried to gnaw the rings off her stubby fingers. Dungbombs and Stinkpellets were dropped so frequently in the corridors that it became the new fashion for students to perform Bubble-Head Charms on themselves before leaving lessons, which ensured them a supply of fresh, clean air, even though it gave them all the peculiar appearance of wearing upside-down goldfish bowls on their heads.

For most students, specifically not the targeted members of the Inquisitorial Squad, classes continued on.

"What're you so tired about?" Ron asked Hermione accusingly as they walked out of Charms class.

"I've never seen you yawn so much in any class, let alone Charms," Harry agreed.

"It's nothing. (Y/N) and I stayed up too late last night." Hermione took a few more steps before turning to her friends, who'd stopped behind her. "Not like that! We talked for hours."

"What could you possibly talk about that long?"

"What could you talk about that long? Quidditch. (Y/N) and I talked about a few future things, an idea I had for this weekend, how we grew up, how our days were, how we were feeling, then we vented a little, and other things you have no business knowing about."

"Look, Hermione," Ron said, stepping in front of her to prevent her from escaping, "we think that the older Malfoy is having a bad effect on you." Hermione looked at Harry, who put his hands up defensively.

"Don't look at me. He didn't talk to me about this."

"What are you on about?" Hermione asked, turning back to Ron.

"You help us less, you spend too much time with him, and you're more snappy." Harry and Hermione gave Ron confused looks. "She's starting to act more like a Slytherin. Every once in a while, it was fine, but now it feels like it's happening more and more."

"Hermione's always been ambitious," Harry commented, looking between his two friends.

"You guys never take my opinions seriously. Last year you said you were into me, Hermione. Liar." After a long silence, Hermione turned away from Ron, tears threatening her eyes.

"You know, Ronald, I held out hope for a long time, until February, in fact, that you would ask me out, but now, nothing. The only feelings I have for you are like a sister has for a brother," Hermione sniffed softly, "You weren't brave enough to ask when I had any feelings for you. You didn't have the drive to do it. Do you know who did? (Y/N). (Y/N) asked. Before we even started dating, he was helping me improve my confidence. It felt so good to tell him I wasn't just going to let him break up with me over what he is dealing with right now. I hope you trust me when I say that it feels good to finally tell you that you are one of the most annoying, insecure, lazy, arrogant prats I have ever met, only beat out by Draco himself." Hermione huffed and stormed back towards the castle.
