Chapter 12 | Fluttering Hearts

[Y/N]

I smiled as I hung up the phone. One of the things I love about Seokjin is that he is very passionate about his work. It's also one of the things that I admire as well. I let out a breath before turning my attention back to my own task.

I was faced with the sad reality of the aftermath of the illegal fighting and sex rings. How people can abuse other living, breathing beings was a mystery to me and it was highly upsetting. Almost all the hybrids we rescued today were in terrible condition. It was quite obvious that they weren't being fed properly. Almost all of the hybrids also had old scars that didn't look like they healed properly. The apex predator hybrids, had by far, the most scars.

But there was another thing that weighed heavily on my heart. The three apex predator hybrids that I was in charge of. I felt some sort of strange connection to them.

I feel so guilty. Ever since the beginning of my relationship with Seokjin, I've never once been flustered or had my heart flutter to this extent because of another man. There was never a moment where I even looked at another man thinking that they were good-looking. But here these three hybrids were and they made my heart flutter just as much as Seokjin manages to do. When they look at me, they look at me with such intensity that I feel like a teenager going through her first crush. Their stares don't feel uncomfortable. Rather, they make me feel like I'm the most beautiful woman in the room. They don't look at me like I'm some object but they look at me like I'm someone very precious to them. It's the same way Seokjin looks at me. So much so that I feel like I'm cheating on Seokjin every time my heart flips when I see the three hybrids.

"Noona," a familiar voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I looked to the doorway of my office to see my brother-in-law. "Namjoon's mates wanted to talk to you if you were available. But if you're too tired, I can tell them that you'll see them first thing tomorrow morning."

"No, I can see them now," I said with a tired smile. "I know they must be very worried about their mate."

"Alright, I'll bring them in then?" he asked with a thankful smile.

"Yeah, I'll see them soon. It can't be too long, though. I have to be in another surgery in about 15 minutes," I reminded him.

Hyunjin nodded. It only felt like a minute since he left my office but he returned with not two but five hybrids.

I didn't know any of their names but I did recognize two of them; the black bear hybrid and the wolf hybrid. I gave them a soft smile.

"Come in and take a seat," I motioned to the two chairs in front of my desk. The youngest three seemed to tell their elders to take the seat, making me smile. "I suppose you're curious about Namjoon-ssi's state?"

They all nodded.

"Well I have some good news and some bad news," I said carefully. "The good news is that the surgery was a big success. The bad news is that he won't be able to participate in a lot of hard physical activities and there might be a few side effects of his injuries."

"Would he need a wheelchair?" The red panda hybrid asked, his eyes welling up in tears.

I smiled at the kind heart that he seemed to have. "No. He'll still be able to shift into his animal form. He'll still be able to walk and run but he won't be able to walk or run long distances and for long periods of time. Obviously, fighting is a big no. But other than that, he'll be in very good shape."

At that, they all seemed to let out a breath of relief.

"Any questions?" I asked.

"Do you have a boyfriend?" The question caught me so off guard that I choked a little on my own saliva. The bunny hybrid looked at me with such innocent eyes that I could only guess that he was most likely the youngest of the bunch.

"I do," I smiled fondly thinking of Seokjin. "I'm actually engaged."

Curiously, though, they all frowned.

"He's a human?" the black bear hybrid asked, his jaw slightly clenched.

I nodded with a smile. "You might have seen him," I said speaking more towards the wolf hybrid. "He was in charge of the operation to rescue all of you. He was the one who dramatically entered the fighting ring," I chuckled at the memory.

"He's the human who had the really loud voice?" the wolf hybrid asked, his eyes wide.

I couldn't help but laugh at his question. "I think he has a loud voice and an even louder laugh but he'll disagree. But his voice was a lot louder in the arena because he was using a megaphone."

"A megaphone?" the bunny hybrid asked, his head tilting to the side making his right ear flop.

I inwardly screamed at how cute he was. "It's something that makes your voice louder. We usually use them in a big room to make sure everyone can hear."

"Oh, so his voice isn't normally that loud," the wolf hybrid spoke with a nod.

"No, you'll be able to see him once he finishes gathering all the evidence from the main building," I informed them.

Before they could ask any more questions, my alarm rang, letting me know that there was about 5 minutes before the surgery.

"Oh, sorry, I have to get to another surgery. My name is Bang Y/N, and Hyunjin can help you get situated. We have a lot of rooms for you guys to stay in and he can also let you know which room Namjoon would have been transferred to," I quickly let them know as I got ready to run to the surgery room.

With a small bow, I quickly excused myself and headed to my next surgery. Letting out a small sigh of relief and tried my best to calm my heart that was fluttering. It was concerning. I think I need to keep my distance until the six of them are ready to live on their own in the 'real world'.
